UNITED STATES PATENT 'A OFFICE.
GEORGE WEIRETER, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE EAGLE PENCIL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED PENCIL-TIP ERASER AND- TWINE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,795, dated February 18,1890.
Application filed October Z4, 1889. Serial No. 328,045 (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE VVEIRETER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Pencil- Tip Eraser and Twine-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
A twine-cutting blade has been attached to or combined with a pencil-tip eraser or a pencil-point protector before my invention.
Under my improvement the twine-cutting blade is applied to a reduced portion of the attachment between the head which carries the eraser and the socket which iits upon the pencil, and with the blade thus arranged I employ, preferably, a sleeve which is movable upon the attachment for the purpose of covering and uncovering the blade.
My improvement in its preferred form is represented in the accompanying drawings, to which reference will now be made.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same in the plane of the cutting-blade. Fig. 3 is a like section crosswise of the blade.
The device shown in the drawings has the general form of what is known as a penciltip eraser. It is made of sheet metal having at one end the socket A, by which it is fitted upon the end of the pencil P, yand at 3o the other end a holder B of any known and suitable construction for the block of erasive material E. Between the parts A and B is a neck or contracted portion C, and in this neck or contracted portion I locate the cutting blade or blades D, which may there be applied and secured in any suitable way, and may have a cutting-edge of any desired form.
I prefer to make the cutter of a thin strip of steel sharpened on its longitudinal edges, which steel strip is inserted into the barrel of the device, and has its sharpened edges projecting through diametricallyopposite slits formed for that purpose in and lengthwise of the neck C. In this WayIcan readily provide an efficient cutter whose cutting edge or edges do not project laterally beyond the body of the attachment. With the parts thus arranged I prefer to combine a sleeve F, movable on the body of the attachment 5o for the purpose of covering and uncovering the cutter. In Fig. 1 this sleeve is represented in full lines in thevposition it occupies when the cutter is uncovered, and in dotted lines in the position it occupies when the cut- 5 5 ter is covered. Y
Having described my improvement and the best way known to meof carrying the saine into effect, what I claim as new and of my own invention is- 1. The attachment for lead-pencils formed with a socket to iit the end of the pencil, a holder for erasive material, a neck or contracted portion between said holder and socket, and a cut-ter located upon the eX- terior of the said contracted portion, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combined twine-cutter vand penciltip eraser having a socket to fit on the end of the pencil, a holder for erasive material, a 7o neck or contracted portion between the said holder and socket, a cutter on said neck or contracted portion, and a sleeve movable to cover and uncover the cutter, as set forth.
3. The eraser-holder and pencil-socket connected by an intermediate longitudinallyslitted neck or contracted portion, and a cutting-blade fitted to the interior of the device so that its longitudinal cutting edge or edges shall project laterally through and beyond 8o the slitted portion of said neck, as and for' the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' GEORGE LWEIRETER.
