SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,879, dated January 21, 1890. Application filed October 31, 1889, Serial No. 328,807- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE CATHERWOOD PLUMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbia, in the county of Richland and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a front View. Fig. 3 is a section taken where the broken lines: 00 is marked on Fig. 2.

This invention has relation to ties for packages of documents and other articles of variable volume and it is designed to provide a tie which will not wear out, and which can be readily and easily adjusted to suit the package, which can be easily removed, and which will'retain its form, so that it can be reapplied quickly, and will always present a neat appearance.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates a thin strip of pliable metal, sheetcopper being preferred, which forms the band. To one end of this band is attached the elongated split ring I), said end being formed transversely straight, as at c, and being secured by bending the end cl of the latter over the same and backward upon the body of the band, to which it may be secured by a small I rivet or by means of lateral lugs formed integral with the band at its end. The other end of the band is made rounded or pointed, as at g, and is adapted to be passed through the central end opening h between the lapped ends 7a 7a of said ring, and to form a loop, as at Z, covering in said lapped ends when drawn over the package, the loop being secured after adjustment by the confining-slide m on the body of the band. After the band has been adjusted to the package and fitted thereon, it will retain the form of the package and will not require readjustment until the breadth or thickness of the package becomes changed by the removal of or addition of documents or other papers. WVhen the contents of the package are to be inspected at any time, the band is disengaged by moving the loop laterally a little to uncover the lapped ends of the split ring, and then slipping the loop edgewise through the opening between said lapped ends. This is very quickly and easily done, and the replacement of the band is accomplished with equal facility.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

The package-tie consisting of the metallic band and connected to one end of the same, the split ring having its ends lapped to form a central end opening, the end loop of the band covering in said lapped ends, and the confining-slide on the body of the band securing said loop, substantially as specified.
