JEREMIAH PHILLEY, OF NORW'ICII, NEW YORK.
NIILK- lFAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,551, datea'January 14, 1890.
- Application iiled June 22, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH PHILLEY, of Norwich, in the county of Chenango, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Pails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my 1inproved pail complete and ready for use. Fig. 3 is a like view of the parts of the same separated from each other, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section upon a line passing from front to rear.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures. I
My invention comprises a milkpail and strainer combined, and is intended to enable the milk to be relieved from all impurities as it passes into the pail, and to permit of its being poured directly from such pail into the receptacle in which it is to be set for cream 5 and to such end my said invention'consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. v
In the carrying of my invention into practice I employ a pail A of usual form andsize and provided with a bail'B, and at the front of such pail provide a spout a, that has its upper end inclosed by means of a cover a', which is hinged at its rear edge and is adapted to be turned upward and rearward. Upon its inner side said spout is inclosed by means of a wire-gauze strainer a2, so that nothing but a liquid can pass from the pail outward through the spout.
The upper open end of the pail A is I nclosed by means of a cover B which at its edge rests upon the edge of said pail, and 1s provided with a flange b, that progects downward within the same. Two or more hookshaped lugs C and C are hinged upon the outer face of said pail, and when turned upward are adapted to engage with the edge `of said cover and lock the same closely down upon said pail, as shown in Figs; l and 3, but when released from such engagement leave said cover free to be removed.
Ata suitable point within the cover B, preferably near its rear edge, is provided a round Serial No. 315,199| (No model.)
opening b', which yhas secured around its edge a flange b2, thateXtends downward, as shown. Said opening is adapted to receive a funnel D, which consists of a flaring body having attached to its lower end a straight nozzle d, that is adapted to loosely iit or to be soldered into the opening o', and has its lower end inclosed by means of a wire-gauze strainer CZ.
A flange b3, which is secured to and projects upward from near the edge around the front portion of the cover B, completes the device, the operation and advantages of which are as follows, viz: Y
The .parts being assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, the pail is used for milking purposes, the streams of milk being directed into thel funnel, through which they pass downward into the pail. Should any hair or dirt fall into said funnel, it will be prevented from passing into said pail, and should there be any considerable accumulation of dirt, or should the strainer become clogged by thick milk, such can be readily and quickly removed by detaching said funnel and pouring water through the same from its small end. If from any cause the pail is overturned, but little, if any, of the milk can escape before said pail can be restored to an upright position. After the pail is filled, as stated, its contents may be discharged into another vessel through the spout, during which operation the milk is again strained and leaves the pail entirely free from separable impurities. Should any milk have spat-tered upon the cover, or should any dirt have lodged upon the same, neither will fall into the receiving-vessel while the contents of the pail are being discharged, as
they will be caught and held by the iiange around. the front upper side of said cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A milk-pail and milk-strainer in which 'are combined a pail provided with a dischargespout having its inner side inclosed by a strainer and its upper end by a hinged lid, a cover that is adapted to inclose the upper end of the pail and to be secured in place thereon by means of hinged locking-lugs, is provided with a flanged-opening, and around its front edge is provided with an upwardly-projecting flange, and a funnel that is adapted to fit into the opening in the cover and' has its lower' IOO end inclosed by means of astrainer, substau-` In testimony that I claim the foregoing I tally as and for the purpose specified. have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of 2. In a milk-pail which is provided with a December, ISST.
dlseharge-spout and has lts upper end 1n- JEREMIAH PHILLEY 5 closed by means of a Cover, a flange that is secured around and extends upwardly fromy Vtnesses: the front edge of such cover, substantially as 'f II. G. PRINDLE, and for Jche purpose shown. EJJ. LOOMIS.
