1. K. PLUMBLY. ASH AND GARBAGE REGE-PTACLE.
110. 419,472. P41411144 Jan. 14,1890.
Witnesses UN IT D STATES PATENT FREDERICK K. PLUMBLY, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, AssIeN oR or ONE-HALF TO TIMOTHY GINGRAS, OF SAME PLACE.
ASH AND GARBAGE RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,472, dated January 14, 1890- Application filed October 21, 1889. Serial No. 327,685. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK K. PLUMBLY, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash and Garbage Receptacles; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to improvements in ash and garbage barrels; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combinationof parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved ash and garbage receptacle. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, portions being broken away to show the internal construction. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
The object of this invention is the production of a portable ash and garbage barrel or receptacle.
A represents a metallic (preferably cylindrical) receptacle having on its upper edge a strengthening-band B and a U -shaped handle 0, riveted to said band by rivets a a. In the lower end of this shellA is a wooden bottom D, secured to the shell by nails or other similar oontrivanoe at, there being placed upon said bottom D an auxiliary bottom D, of metal, to protect the wooden bottom proper from injury by hot ashes and other causes.
To the lower side of the bottom D is secured an angular piece or bolster E, by means of bolts f f, having eyes i i, said bolts having washers h on the bottom of the bolster, and nuts g, with underlying washers, on the top of the said auxiliary bottom 1), whereby all these parts are thoroughly secured together. In the eyes 2' z" revolves an axle F, having on both ends wheels G G, as clearly shown in the drawings. To the bottom D are furthermore secured one or more supports H II, of preferably V-shaped contour and of a height corresponding with that of the truck-wheels G G, in such manner that the receptacle A I will stand in a perpendicular position when resting upon said wheels and supports. Opposite the handle 0 there is secured to the shell A a further handle J, so that the entire receptacle may be. readily carried about by taking hold of said handles 0 and J. I
It will be readily observed that by the 1n troduction of the wheels to the bottom of the receptacle it may be easily moved about by tilting it slightly, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby overcoming all the objections to the common ash-barrel as now in general use.
The shell of the barrel is preferably made of galvanized iron and the apparatus constructed in several different sizes, so that they will readily nest one into the other in packing and shipping -an advantage which will be appreciated by the manufacturer of this device-whereby cost of transportation 1s reduced to a minimum.
The upper end of the shell A is to be closed by a cover B, having cleats B underneath and a cleat it on its upper surface, it being made of metal, for obvious reasons.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States-- I 1. As an improved article of manufacture, an ash and garbage barrel consisting of a shell, a bottom having a bolster, an axle revolving in bearings on said bolster and having wheels on its extremities, supports below said bottom, and a handle on the side of the shell, all as heretofore set forth and described.
2. In ash and garbage receptacles, the combination, with the shell A, having top band and U-shaped handle, of the bottom B, hav ing bolster E, eyebolts to secure said bolster to the bottom, the axle F, revolving in said eyebolts and provided with truck-wheels and the support H, the whole being constructed and combined as and for the purpose set forth.
In ash and garbage receptacles, the eommy invention I have hereto set my hand in binatioln'wibh the shell and bottom, of the the presence of two subscribing witnesses. bolster, the eyebolts for securing said bolster Y T T to the bottom, and the axle, with its Wheels, FREDLRICIX PLUMBLX' J said axle being jom'naled in the eyes of said Attest:
bolts, as and for the objects specified. WM. 0. STARK,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as MICHAEL J. STARK.
