Description
(No Model.) 'F. B. GIBBS. COMBINED CARBON PAPER HOLDER AND WRITING TABLET.
No. 418,283. 1 Patented Dec. 31, 1889. I c I I Wi 7166586 W M UQMW ZZZM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLETCHER B. GIBBS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CARBON-PAPER HOLDER AND WRITING-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,283, dated December 31, 1889 Application filed July 17, 1889. Serial No. 317,823- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLETCHER B. GIBBS, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Carbon Paper Holder and VVriting-Tablet, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is plan view of the carbon-paper book open and one of the carbon sheets turned partially back. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the book closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device partially inserted into an ordinary order-book.
This invention relates' to a carbon-paper book for use in connection with salesmens order-books or other books where it is desired to make duplicate copies of the writing, and has for its objects to produce a device consisting, essentially, of a thin smooth cover, to the outer edge of one section of which are bound anumber of leaves of carbon paper, which are secured beneath a thin strip of suitable material attached to the edge of the cover, by means of which device one section of the cover can be used as a base or rest for the sheets of paper to be written upon and one sheet of the carbon paper can be used until worn out without creasing or handling the other pieces, all as illustrated in the draw ings and hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A B represent the two sections of an ordinary cover, which is to be made of card-board, pasteboard, or other thin smooth material. These sections A 'B are flexibly united on the line 0.
C are sheets of carbon paper of about the same size as the section B of the cover. They are secured to the right-hand edge of the section B.
a is a narrow strip of pasteboard or other suitable material, which is held in place above and along the edgeof the carbon sheets C bya piece of paper or cloth I), pasted to the strip and to the edge and under side of the section- B. The section A is narrower than the section B, and when the section A is folded over its free edge will be against or along the line Of the strip a.
the section A is to be folded over upon the upper sheet of the carbon papers that have not been disturbed. After this has been done the device is ready to be placed in an orderbook, which is accomplished as follows: Two or more leaves of the order-book are to be raised sufficiently to permit the cover A B and the carbon sheets that are between them to be placed beneath the raised leaves. The carbon sheet that had been previously turned to one side is then to be placed beneath the upper leaf of the order-book. Such upper leaf can then be written upon, and by reason of the interposed carbon sheet a duplicate of the writing will be made on the second page of the order-book.
As the cover, which is to have a smooth surtace,is to be placed immediately beneath the leaf 011 which the duplicate copyis to be made, or beneath some of the succeeding leaves of the order-book, a good back for the paper is provided when writing, and by having the sheets of carbon paper which are not in use between the cover-sections A B such sheets will be kept smooth and uninjured. When a sheet of carbon paper has become worn out, it can be torn off and the next one in the pile turned back and applied, as just described.
The strip a, in addition to holding the carbon sheets in place, acts as a stop, against which the edges of the pages of the orderbook con1e,when the carbon-holder is inserted between the leaves and prevents the cover A B from being slipped too far into the orderbook. The strip a also furnishes the means for holding the device when inserting it in posed at the right-hand side of the salesmans such cover being narrower than the other sec- 10 order-book and was greatly 'in the Way. tion, and one or more carbon sheets 0, secured The cover herein shown and described can to the outer edge of the cover-section B, and be used With a single sheet of carbon paper, the strip a, substantially as and for the purif desired. pose specified.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure FLETCHER B. GIBBS. by Letters Patent, is- Witnesses:
As a new of article of manufacture, a book FRANK D. RICHARDSON, consisting of the cover A B, one section A of JULIET A. WVALLAOE.
