Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT FEICE.
JOHN GREEK, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
lMPROVED CLOTH ES-FRAME.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 4 l ,698, dated February 23, 1864.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN GREEK, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburgh and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Clothes Frame and Drier; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is la vertical central section of my invention, taken in the line x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top View of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate correy sponding parts in the two iigures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe'it.
A represents a vertical post, which isiitted in a base, B, of suflicient dimensions and weight to retain the post in an upright position. C C represent two hubs placed on thc post A, one hub, C, resting on the top of the post and allowed to turn freely upon it, but not to slide, the other hub, C', being allowed to turn freely on the post and also to slide thereon. y
To the upper hub, C, there are attached, byjoints or pins a, four arms, b, and to the lower hub, C', there are attached in a similar manner, by pins a', four arms, b', and the outer ends of said arms are connected by pins or screws c. By this arrangement it will be seenthat a jointed revolving frame is ob-v tained, one that will turn freely on the post A and be capable 'of being expanded, as shown in red outline in Fig. l.
The arms b b have holes made in them at equal and suitable distances apart, through which a clothes-line, D, passes, and on this line the clothes are suspended when the frame is expanded or adjusted, as shown in Fig. l. The lower hub, C', is retained in an upward position by a pin, d, which passes horizontally through the post A. The frame with the clothes upon it may be freely turned, so as to bring the clothes successively in front ot' a iire or stove, that all may be dried, and this revolving of the frame greatly facilitates the adjustment of the clothes upon the line and their removal therefrom, as the operator may stand in a single spot and turn the frame, instead of walking around it, as would be the case if the frame were stationary.
When the device is not in use, the frame is contracted, or folded, so that its arms b b will be in contact with post A. The device is thus rendered compact, and may be stowed away ina small space. A great length of line is also obtained within a quite limited space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rlhe combination of the post A, the hubs C C', the arms b b', jointed together at or near their extremities, and the cord D, passed through or around both the upper or lower members of the arms, all as hereinbefore described, and for the purposes specified.
