FRANK P. VFST, OF EAST HELENA, MONTANA TERRITORY.
S PIKE- EXTRACTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,529, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed July 11, 1889. Serial No. 317,111. (No model.)
To all whom. t may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK P. WVEsT, a citi` zen of the United States of America, residing being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spike-extractors, the same being designed more especially for pulling railroad-spikes, but applicable to other purposes.
The invention is designed as an improvement upon my patent, No. 859,194, dated March 8, 1887; and said improvement consists in connecting the bifurcated block which is placed over the rail with a lever by links, so that the parts will be permanently and movably connected to each other, thus preventing separation or loss of the parts, the special construction being such that the lever when properly placed can be used for placing the block over the rail, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and speciiically pointed out in the claims. c
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved spike-extractor, and Fig. 2 a detail perspective view of the bearing-block and links attached thereto.
A refers to the handle of the lever, which is provided near its lower end with a notch or recess d, which is closed by a latch-bar B, pivoted to the lever, said latch-bar and lever having a perforation, through which can be passed a pin for locking the latch-bar to prevent the removal of the claw C, which is ofA substantially the same construction shown in my prior patent, hereinbefore referred to. The under face of the lower end of the lever l is curved, and adjacent to the ends of the on a line with the projection d2, is provided with a perforation, through which passes a bolt employed for connecting the slotted links E E to the lever A and the block D. The block D is provided at its upper end with two projecting lugs d d, over which are passed the lower ends of the links E, said links having perforations, and through these lugs are perforations in which are inserted springkeys for holding the lower ends of the links upon the lugs. The upper ends of the links, having slots e', are secured to the lever A by the bolt hereinbefore referred to, and beneath these links and integral with the` handle A are bosses e2 for the purpose of holding the same at a suitable distance from the sides of the lever. The lower ends of the links diverge slightly, which will assist in preventing side movement of the block upon the lever. The upper portion of the block D has raised side walls at its front portion, and between the rear ends of these side walls is pivoteda roller F, and upon this roller the rounded portion of the lever is adapted to bear at the commencement of the upward pull of the claw. At the extreme front portion of the block between the raised side walls is a stop or connecting-web. The block D is provided with a screw X, passed through one of the members thereof and used for securing the block over an object, as a rail, upon which it is placed. The upper part of the links being slotted allows l.the lever to change the center of the line of draft.
1 claim- A 1. The combination, witha lever carrying a pivoted claw, of a block D, bifurcated to form depending portions to bear on the base of a rail, and links E E for connecting the block to the lever, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a spike-extractor, the combination of the lever A, the lower end thereof being constructed substantially as shown and provided with a curved portion, a claw carried by said lever, and a block having Va recessed upper face and roller and bifurcated to form depending portions to bear on the base of a rail, said block being connected to the lever by slotted links E E, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a spike-extractor, of a lever carrying a claw, said lever having IOO n eurved lower portion und projection ai?, slotted links connecting the lever with the bloek l), said block having the upper l'zioe thereof recessed to provide thereon side walls, and :t roller pivoled between the rear portions of said side wa11s,so that the curved face und projection @20u11 Contact with said roller, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in L spike-extractor,
consisting of :t lever constructed substantially n as shown, a elmv pivotally connected to said lever, slotted linksE E, connected to the lever
