OTTO FLEISOHHAUER, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECEIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,453, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed May 1, 1889. $erial No. 309,297. -(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO FLEISOHHAUER, a subject of the King of Saxony, German Empcror, and a resident of the city of Berlin, in Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in snap-hooks such as are used for connecting watch-chains with watches, lockets, &c., or for holding trinkets, for holding bands in button-holes, straps 011 rings, (to.
The object of my invention is to provide a snap-hook which is simple in construction and which holds and locks the article securely.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved snap-hook closed. Fig. 2 is a face View of the same open. Fig. 3 is a face view of the same closed and a ring held in the snap-hook. Fig. 4 is a face view of the same, showing the same open and in position for moving the ring to the upper part of the hook. Fig. 5 is a faceview of the same, showing a number of rings held on both parts of the snap-hook. Fig. 6 is a face view of a modified construction closed. Fig '7 is a face view of the construction shown in Fig. (5 opened. Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional view on line a; 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view on line Q/ g, Fig. 1. Fig. 10 shows the snap-hook secured to a band and holding a number of trinkets. Fig. 11 shows the snaphook held in a button-hole.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The snap-hook is composed of two main parts A and B, the former being made of wire and the latter of a piece of circularly-bent tubing. The wire forming the part Ais bent to form a frame having the tops inclined toward each other and then bent upward and outward to form a segmental curved short shank b and a larger shank a, said shanks a and I) being curved on the same center. Be-
tween the lower ends of said shanks the openlng e e is formed. The tube-shaped part B consists of a tube 1 of such diameter that the shanks a and b can pass into the same, said tube being curved on the same radius with the shanks a and b. At one end the tube is provided With a curved arm d, which connects it with another tubular piece or arm 0,
curved on the same radius as the tube 1" and the shanks a and b. The piece 0 is provided with a slot 0 of sufficient width to permit the shank a to pass. A collar A is secured to the free end of the curved tuber, and a spiral spring f is contained Within the curved tube r, one end of said spring resting against the end of the shank a and the other resting against the fixed lug of the piece a in the tube 1', which spring has the tendency to keep the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1.
When it is desired to apply a ring 0 on the snap-hook, a finger is placed against the fixed collar A and the same pressed in the direction of the arrow 00, Fig. 1, whereby the curved tube will be moved in the same direction and the curved arm d and short tube 0 brought into the positions shown in Fig. 2, the short curved tube 0 being 011 the shank b. The curved arm d forms a recess into which the ring 0 can be placed.
lVhen the curved tube r is released, the expanding spring f throws it in inverse direction of the arrow 00 and brings the parts back into their normal position, (shown in Fig. 1,) and thereby the ring 0 is carried through the top opening of the bottom part of frame A of the snap-hook, as shown in Fig. 3. In case it is desired to bring this ring into the upper part B of the snap-hook, the collar A is again pressed down so as to bring the part B into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and then the ring is moved upward, as indicated by the arrow 00 in Fig. 4, and then the collar A released. rings may be brought into the "upper part B or lower part A of the snap-hook, as shown in Fig. 5. A numberof trinkets can be held on the part B of the snap-hook, asshown in Fig. 10, and the snap-hook can be passed through a button-hole, as shown in Fig. 11.
If desired, the parts may be reversedthat is, the bottom part A may be made integral with a curved tube A adapted to receive a curved wire at, having the bend d and the shank b, the bottom part A being provide In this manner any number of ICO with a short bent tube 0. This device is opened by pushing the bent wire a into the curved tube a, as shown in Fig. 7. The ring to be secured to the snap-hook is then placed into the recess formed by the bend d and the wire a pushed back into the position shown in Fig. 6.
This snap-hook is composed of few parts, is very simple and very secure, and forms a double lock, which is a very essential feature.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-en t- 1. A snap-hook composed of a main frame having two curved shanks and a tubular sliding piece curved on the same radius as the curved shanks and adapted to slide on said shanks, which sliding piece is provided with a curved part or arm forming a recess, substantially as set forth.
2. A snap-hook composed of a main frame having two curved shanks and a tubular sliding piece curved on the same radius as the 5 curved shanks and adapted to slide on said shanks, which sliding piece is provided with a curved part or arm forming a recess, and a spring inclosed in saidtubular piece and acting on the sliding part, substantially as set forth.
3. A snap-hook composed of a main frame having two circularly-curved shanks of different lengths, a tubular sliding piece curved on the same radius as the shanks of the main frame and adapted to slide on said shanks of the main frame, which sliding piece consists of two curved shanks connected by a bent arm or part forming a recess, and a spring inclosed in said tubular piece, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTTO FLEISCIIITAUER.
'itnesses:
JULIUS STUCKENBERG, ULmcH R. MAERZ.
