` (No Moaef) D. G.WYETH.
FIFTH WHEEL POR BUGGIES.
-1\To.l116,313.` Patented Dem, 1889. l
illlmmmili UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID e. wYETI-I, oE NEWARK, oI-no.
FIFTH-WHEEL FOR BuGGlEs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,313, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed May 8', 1889. Serial No. 310,067. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, DAVID G. WYETH, of Newark, Licking county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Fifth- 'Wheel for Buggies; and I declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. O
lVIy invention relates to improvements in buggies wherein the springs which-support the vehicle-body are arranged triangularly with the rear axle and approach or come together at the middle o f the front axle.
The object of the invention is to cheapen and simplify the construction of fifth-wheels in such buggies intended for common and ordinary use by employing, essentially, two clips encircling the front vehicle-axle, the lower of which clips clasps or links with a spring-bed, into which the front ends of -such vehicle-springs set; and such spring-bed may be economically cast of malleable iron.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the entire fifth-wheel in perspective.l Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the springbed, which receives and holds the front ends of the vehicle-springs. Fig. 3 shows the method of connecting the buggy shafts, thills, or pole to the front vehicle-axle.
Like letters mark like parts.
In Fig. 1,A is the middle portion of the front vehicle-axle. An ear a., perforated to receive a bolt, is made upon the rear lower side ofthe iron axle A. A clip b, over the middle of said axle, has a nut in front at c, and is modified into an eye d in rear. A clip or clip-bar e beneath the axle has an eye f in front, in usual form to receive front part of clip b, and is modified into a bolt form g in rear, which passes through the ear a and eye CZ and takes a nut h. The bolt portion g of the clip-bar e curves below and from the axle, so as to pass through a perforated part 'i of the spring-bed j. This spring-bed takes the fore end of the vehicle-springs 7o 7c, which are therein fastened by bolts Z Z; also, the contiguous or nearly contiguous edges of the springs may be notched or punched to receive lugs m m in the spring-bed 7', as an additional security. The springs bear upon the spring-bed at n, and the spring-bed overlaps and rests upon the springs at 0. (See also Fig. 2.) A spring may be secured between the front part 4p of the clip-bar e and axle A, and made to bear upon the springbed at q, as an anti-rattler.
The vehicle-shafts V, Fig. 3, are set upon the axle A at such a pitch that the latter will be held in as nearly an upright position as practicable when the buggy is in use. The shaft-irons s s are modified at the lower ends `to pass through the clip-bar t and receive 'nuts a.
The vehicle shafts or pole may be otherwise rigidly secured to the axle A at desired proper pitch by methods already in use.
I claimp l. In a buggy wherein lateral buggy-springs are arranged triangularly with the rear axle and come together at the middle of the front axle, the combination of the fifth-wheel or coupling, consisting of the clip b, having the eye d, the clip or clip bar e, having the eye f and the bolt. formation g, the spring-bed j, having the perforated part i, through which said bolt formation g passes, and adapted to receive and hold the front ends of the buggysprings, combined and arranged as described, with the axle A, having the perforated ear or lobe ct, all substantially as described.
2. In a buggy wherein lateral vehiclesprings are arranged triangularly with the rear axle and come together at the middle of the front axle, the combination of the coupling or fifth-wheel, consisting of the clip b, having the eye CZ, the clip or clip-bar e, having the. eye f and bolt formation g, made to pass through the lug or ear a and eye d, the spring-bed j, having a perforated part 12, through which said bolt formation g passes, and adapted to Vreceive and hold the front ends of Vehicle-springs, with the axle A, having the lug or ear d, and the vehicle shafts or pole V, firmly secured to the axle A at the usual places of attachment of vehicle shafts or pole to axle by the shaft-irons s s and clipbar t, all substantially as described.
