)NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ALEXANDER MORSMAN AND EDWARD H. HIGBY, OF MAPLETON,
. KANSAS.
VEHICLE-WHEEL.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,117, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed August 31, 1889. Serial No. 322,606. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN ALEXANDER MORSMAN and EDWARD H. 'HIGBY, citizens of the United States, residing at Mapleton, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-VVheels; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vehicle-wheels; and it has for its object to provide an improved wheel which shall be strong, light, and durable.
The invention consists in-the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is aside elevation of our improved wheel with parts broken away to better illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a central' vertical section through the same.
Referring to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the main casting,
which comprises a sleeve or skein B, from which extends from near the center a web 0, which at its outer end terminates in a flange D, having at each end a circumferential shoulder E, for a purpose hereinafter described. Near each end this casting is slightly tapered, as shown at F in Fig. 2, to receive the flanges hereinafter specified.
G are flanges having a central bore to receive the sleeve portion of the casting, as shown in Fig. 2, one portion being tapered, as shown, to correspond to the taper of the outer ends of the sleeve, as at F. These flanges have at their inner edge a circumferential inwardly-extending rim H, which embrace the flange D of the casting and fit against the shoulders E thereof and serve to walls of the flanges D are preferably slightly 7 inclined from the web 0, as shown in Fig. 2, to add strength thereto.
I are bolts passed through the flanges G and through the web 0, and serve to hold the parts rigidly together.
J are the spokes, which may-be of any approved construction, either solid or hollow, arranged zigzag or otherwise, as preferred. These spokes are passed through the outer ends of the flange D, as shown in Fig. 2, and are provided with a nut K on the inside of the flange and another nut upon the outside, by which they may be easily adjusted and tightened when occasion may require.
Instead of making the outer ends of the sleeve portion with a tapered part F, as above described, we may form the sleeve with a log, as shown in Fig. 1, for the same purpose.
The wheel may be provided with a suitable tire, as at L, if desired.
\Vhat We claim as new is 1. The combination, with the casting comprising a sleeve having enlargement F and central web terminating in a central annular flange, of the flanges G, engaging the annular flange of the casting and held from turning by the enlargements on the sleeve, and the bolts passed through the flanges and through the web, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the casting formed with sleeve having tapered outer ends F, Web 0, and flange D, of the flanges G, engaging the flange D and having tapered bore fitting over the tapered outer ends of the sleeve, the spokes, and the transverse bolts, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our'names in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ALEXANDER MORSMAN. EDWARD H. HIGBY. Witnesses:
G. J. McQUAID, L. H. WEAVER.
