Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD F. COOK, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BATH-Tues.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 1,486, dated February 9, 1864.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. COOK, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and Territory of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bath-Tubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilcation, in Which- Figure l is a front view of a bathtub constrrcted according to my invention; Fig. 2, a Side sectional view of the same, taken in the luie x x, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class otbaths which are provided witha high back, and are commonly termed -hipbaths.77 These backs, in consequence of being so high and farabove the water in the tub, are
invariably cold, so much so as to render it eX- tx'eniely uncomfortableyto take a warm bath. To obviate this diiculty is the object of this invention, which consists in constructing the hai-k with double walls, so that the space between may, previous to bathing, be tilled with warm water, and the back thereby renderrd Warm, so as not to be uncomfortable.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, l will proceed to describe it.
A represents the bodyof the bath-tub, which may be of the usual form, and B is the back of the tub, which is also ot the usual form, but constructed with double walls a a, with a space, l1, between them, as shown in Fig. 2. This space may extend down to the bottom of the tub. It would be preferable to construct it in this way, as it is most convenient, although itis not strictly' necessary, asthe water in the bottom of the tub will keep, of course, the submerged portion of the back wai-1n. By having, however, the space b eX- tend down to the bottom of the tub a larger volume of hot water is obtained, and it will not cool as quickly as a smaller volume. Thereis some advantage in this.
By this improvement it will be seen that if the space cr hot-\vater. chamber b be filled previous to using the bath the back B will be warmed and rendered comfortable for the occupant ofthe bath.
This invention will not augment materially the cost of construction of the bath.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improved article of manufacture- A bath-tub having its back constructed with double Walls to form a hot-water chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
E. F. COOK.
