A. M. WALRADT & G. A. GOBBAN.
CARPET STRBTGHER.
Patented Nov. 12
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARRUNAH M. IVALRADT AND GEORGE A. COBBAN, CE CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,737, dated November 12, 1889.
i l Application filed March 9, 1889. Serial No. 302,680. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARRUNAH M. WAL- EADT and GEORG-E A. COBBAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county lof Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new7 and useful Improvement in Carpet-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification. r
This invention relates to carpet-stretchers; an d it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability,
' and general efficiency.
lVith these ends in view our invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of its operative parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our improved carpet-stretcher, showing the same inv position to begin stretching. Fig. 2 is longitudinal sectional view showing the stretcher extended. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken transversely through the head of the stretcher.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A designates the head of our improved carpet-stretcher, which consists of a wooden bar of suitable dimensions having a series of downwardly-extending teeth B B, formed by a series of inverted-U-shaped staples having sharp points, which are driven vertically through the said head-bar, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The head A is providedwith a rearwardly-extending handle C, which is connected to the said head by means of braces D D, and centrally to they -plate E, which extends upwardly from the head A, as described. The front end of the bar .I is provided with a prong K, adapted to be driven intov the floor adjoining the washboard of a room, so as to retain the device in its operative position. The upper side ofy the bar .I is provided with a series of ratchetteeth L L, adapted to be engaged by a pawl M, which is mounted pivotally in the extreme upper end of the slot G of lever or handle vF.
The operation of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
To place the device in position for operation, the prong at the end of the ratchet-bar is driven into the ioor adjoining the washboard. The pawl is then disengaged from .the ratchet-bar and the upper or outer end of lthe lever F is moved forwardly to the position shown in Fig. l, thus drawing the head A to its rearmost limit. The teeth or points of the head A are then caused to engage the carpet, after which the lever-handle F is moved rearward, thus forcing the head A in a forward direction and stretching the carpet. As the lever F is moved rearward the pawl M will engage the ratchets upon the bar J, .and thus retain the parts of the device positively in any position to which they may be adjusted with relation to each other. When the stretcher has been operated to the limit of its capacity, the lever-handle F Will lie down flat and will not interfere with the operator while he is tacking down the carpet.
The device is simple in constructionand may be constructed ata small expense.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- A carpet-stretcher comprising, in combination, a slotted or bifurcated lever, a handle having a toothed cross-head and a slotted guide-plate, a rack-bar having a prong at its front end, and a pawl, said handle, rack-bar, and pawl being mounted pivotally at respectively the lower end, the middle, and the upper end of the slot of said bifurcated lever, in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in` presence of two witnesses.
. hi AEEUNAH M. s WALEADT.
