BAND-CUTTER.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,457, dated November 5, 1889.
Application filed July 8, 1889.

Be it known that I, ANDREW XV. STORER, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Mason City, in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Band Cutter, of which the following is a speeification.
My invention relates to improvements in band-cutters; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved band-cutter. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the vibratory knife removed, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on the line a; of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I employ a pitchfork consisting of the handle A and the casting B, secured to the end of the'handle and having the tines C C and the notch D between the tines, The walls of this notch I) are inclined, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the upper edge of one wall and the lower edge of the opposite wall will form cuttingedges, as shown at E in Fig. 3.
Upon the casting B, adjacent to the notch D, I pivot the vibratory knife F, the end of which is tapered, as shown at G, so as to enter readily between the band and the bundle7 and from its inner or rear end a lever or handle H extends'alongside the ihandle A of the fork, and this lever H is normally pressed outward by a spring I, secured thereto and having its free end bearing on the casting B. The lever is prevented from being thrown too far from the handle A by the hook or eye J, secured thereto and encircling the casing.
In practice the fork is inserted into the bundle so that the band will pass over one of the tines, through the notch D, and under the other tine. As the bundle is delivered to the thrashingmachine, the lever His pressed toward the handle A, thereby bringing the knife-edge of the vibratory knife against the band, so as to severit.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the aocompanying drawings, it will be seen that I h'ave provided a very simple band-eutt-ei','hy which the bands will be effeetually severed as the bnndle is delivered onto the feed-table of a thrashingierial No. 316,759. (No model.)
machine, so that the grain can be readily spread. The spring secured to the lever automatically returns the vibratory knife to its initial position after the band has been severed, and the eye secured to the lever and encircling the handie of the fork prevents the knife being thrown so far to one side as to interfere with the insertion of the fork into the bnndle. It will be observed that the walls of the notoh between the tines of the fork are so shaped as to present Cuttingedges, and the vibratory knife acts so that a shearing action is had on the band and the cutting of the same rendered very easy.
The cutter can be readily adapted to a left-handed person by removing the pivotbolt and then applying the vibratory knife to the under side of the fork and restoring the pivot-bolt, as will be readily understood.
My device is composed of very few parts and is compactly arranged, and its advantages are thought to be obvions. The lever and the knife are formed integral.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the fork having the tines and the notch between the tines, the walls of said notch being formed to provide Cutting'edges, of the vibratory knife pivoted on the fork adj acent to the said notch, and means for Operating said knife, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the fork having the tines and the notch D between the tines, the walls of said notch presenting the knifeedges E, of the vibratory knife pivoted on the fork adjacent to said notch and having its outer end tapered and having a lever extending from its inner end, and the spring arranged between the said lever and the fork,
