CARL ll. IIAUGK, OF NPHV YORK, N. Y.
MACHINE FOR MAKING LONG-FILLER BUNCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,216, dated November 5, 1889.
Apulication filed January 10, 1889. Serial No. 295,928. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. HAUGK, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, a citizen of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Long-Filler Bunches, of which the following is a specification.
I filed an application, Serial No. 258,192, September 12,1888, for an improved machine for making long-filler bunches. This machine is provided with a box or receptacle which is to be filled with cut tobacco for makin g long-filler bunches, said out tobacco being gradually forced out of the open end of said receptacle by a follower.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for cutting the tobacco in the proper shape for making a long-filler bunch and filling a box or receptacle with said out tobacco.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved machine for filling boxes or receptacles with out tobacco for making long-filler bunches. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the box for receiving the uncut tobacco. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The box A, which is open at the top and at one end, has a cover B, hinged to the top of the closed end, part of which cover fits into the box, and which cover is held down on the box by suitable spring-catches C. At the open end of the box a plate D is secured transversely across the top of the box, said plate D having a slot D of the shape of a cigar-bunch. This plate D can be removed and replaced by another having a longer or shorter slot D, according to the size of bunch to be made. According to the size of the slot D the transverse dimensions of the box must be decreased or increased, and this is accomplished by inserting filling-pieces E, resting against the inner surface of one side of the box. The cover B can be widened to fit snugly into the Soa-djusted box by fillingpieces F, secured on one edge of the cover.
A slot D also having the shape of a cigar- 1 bunch, is provided in the bottom of the box A below the slot D. A follower G, fitting in the box, is provided with a downwardlyprojecting lug G, having a screw-threaded aperture, through which the screw-spindle H passes, which is mounted to turn in lugs I, projecting downward from the under surface of the box at the ends of the same. The lug G passes through the longitudinal slot A in the bot-tom of the box.
The spindle H is provided at its rear end with a beveled pinion J, engaging a beveled cog-wheel J, mounted on a shaft K, on which is also mounted a ratchet-wheel K, engaged by a pawl K on an arm L, mounted to rock on the shaft K, said arm L being connected by a link L with the cog-wheel M, mounted on a shaft M. The cog-wheel M engages the driving cog-wheel N. 011 the shaft M the belt-pulley M is mounted, which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and over the same the belt 0 passes, which also passes over the pulley P, mounted on a-shaft P, journaled in standards P of the machine-frame. On the shaft P a cam Q is mounted, which can act on the upper end of a vertically-reciprocating bar R, which is guided in lugs R of the standards P said rod being pressed upward by a spiral spring S surrounding it and resting 011 one of the lugs R and against the transverse pin S of said rod. To the lower end of the bar R a tubular knife or cutter T is secured,
. which is cigar-shaped and can pass through The lower part of the slot D of the plate D. the bar R is made tubular and contains a rod U, on the lower end of which the plunger U is fastened within the tubular knife T. A transverse pin V passes through the rod U and two longitudinal slots in the tubular part of the bar R, and to the ends of said pin springs V are fastened, which pull the plunger-rod U upward. The bar R is provided with a curved arm \V, to which is pivoted a forked lever W, that rests on the ends of the pin V, one end of said forked lever projecting beyond the arm NV. The lower bracket R is provided with a fixed stop X, against which the projecting end of the fork W can strike. The box a, for receiving the cut tobacco or filler for forming the bunches, is held verti- IOC box is filled with tobacco, and then the ma chine is started. The screw -spindle H is turned by the pawl and ratchet and moves the follower G in the direction of the arrow Fig. 1, whereby tobacco is forced from the left toward the right-hand end of the box A. As
the shaft P is rotated the cam Q, acting on the bar R, presses the same downward, causing the knife T to pass through the slots D and D and to cut off a certain amount of tobacco of the shape of' said knife. When the bar R is lowered, the projecting end of the forked lever W strikes a fixed top X, whereby the inner end of said lever W is forced downward and presses downward the plunger-rod V, causing the plnngerV' to force the tobacco from the knife through the opening D into the upper open end of the box a, at the same time gradually forcing down the filling-piece d. When the cam Q moves upward, the spring S moves the rod R upward and the springs V raise the plunger. WVhen the box a is filled, it is removed and replaced by another.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a machine for making long-fillercigarbunches, the combination, with a box for receiving the tobacco to be out, which box is provided at one end with a cigar shaped slot in its top and bottom, said slots being one above the other, of a follower in said box, a cigar-shaped cutter mounted to reciprocate at right'angles to the longitudinal axis of the box and to pass through the cigar-shaped slots in the top and bottom of the box, a receptacle for the cut tobacco below the cigarshaped slot in the bottom of the box, and a movable filling-piece in said receptacle, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for makinglong-filler cigarbunches, the combination, with a box for receiving the tobacco to be out, which box is provided at one end with a cigar-shaped slot in the top and bottom, said slots being one above the other, of a follower in said box, a cigar-shaped cutter mounted to reciprocate at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the box and to pass through the cigar-shaped slots in the top and bottom of the box, a re ceptacle for the cut tobacco held below the cigar-shaped slot in the bottom of the box, a sliding filling-piece in said receptacle, and friction-springs for holding said filling-piece in place, substantially as set forth.
In a machine for making long-filler cigarbunches, the combination, with a hollow cigar-shaped cutter, of a bar to which said cutter is secured, arod mounted to reciprocate within a bore in said bar, a plunger secured to the lower end of said rod, a pin projecting through said rod and through slots in the bar, springs for pulling said pin upward, a pivoted lever forpressing said pin downward, and a stop for engaging said pivoted lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' CARL H. HAUGK.
