UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE DRAPER dz SONS, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,994, dated October 29, 1889.
Application filed July 20, 1889.
To and whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. XVooD, of Baltimore, county of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented an Improvement in Spool-Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve spool-holders of the class represented in United States Patent No. 2%,67 7, whereby the said spool-holder may also act as aclearer or evener for the yarn.
In accordance with my invention I have provided the frame of the spool-holder with a blade, the edge of which lies close to and cooperates with an edge attached to or forming part of the pod of the holder, and preferably the blade is attached to the spool-holder in an adjustable manner.
My invention consists, essentially, in the trough of a spool-Holder having a substantially straight edge and a head and a weighted lip at one side thereof, combined with a blade connected to the said head and extended downwardly, with its lower edge close to the edge of the trough, to operate as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 in side elevation represents a spool-holder improved in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a section of the same in the line 00; Fig. 3, an opposite side elevation of the holder shown in Fig. 1.
The foot A, the pod B,the overhanging arm O, and the weighted presser D are and may be all substantially as common.
The spool-holder is adapted to hold a spool, as a, it having wound upon it yarn g which is to be led therefrom to usual mechanism for winding side by side a number of such yarns led from spools in a series of holders side by side. -To enable the holder to also serve as a clearer or scraper, I have added to it a blade, as (Z, which is held in adjusted position by a screw, as 6, passed through a slot 6 in the shank d of the blade and into the head 0, the said shank (1 being guided between Serial No. 318,128. (No model.)
shoulders 2 2 of the head O, as shown in Fig. 3, to thus keep the blade in place with its edge in line with and more or less close to the edge 4 of the pod B, the width of the space being more or less, according to the size or class of yarn being unwound from the spool, any motes or imperfections in the yarn being scraped off between the blade and pod and the yarn cleared of soft bunches. If the knot or imperfection is large and cannot be easily removed, the thread Will be broken at the spool-holder. Besides clearing the yarn, the blade also acts somewhat as a tension and aids in the uniform delivery of yarn.
I am aware that a spool-holder having two gravitating lips or jaws at each side the trough has been provided above the arm from which the said lips are suspended with two blades, as in United States Patent No. 306,109; so I do not herein broadly claim a clearer combined with a spool-holder, but rather my invention is limited to the peculiar construction of my combined spool-holder and clearer, whereby the same is greatly simplified and cheapened in cost.
In my invention one edge of the trough is made to perform the duty of one blade or edge of the clearer, and in place of oue of the lips or jaws of the said patent I' have substituted the broad blade d, which is extended down substantially to the edge of the trough.
I claim- The trough B of the spool-holder, having a substantially straight edge 4., and the head O and a weighted lipD at one side thereof, combined with the blade d, connected to the said head O and extended downwardly to place its lower edge close to the said edge 4, to operate as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
