UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea.
ROSA II. LOVE, OF SUMNER, WASHINGTON TERRITORY.
DEVICE FOR SECURING THE COVERS OF BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,071, dated October 15, 1889.
Application led January 15, 1889. Serial No. 296,380. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROSA H. LOWE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Sumner, in the county of'Pierce and Territory of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing the Covers of Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view of abedstead, illustrating the application of my improved device for securing' the covers. Fig. 2 is a view of the bar secured to the head-board of the bed, showing the straps and clamps in position upon the same; and Fig. 3 is a view of one of the clamps.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to devices for preventing persons, and especially children, from throwing olf the bed-clothes during sleep, securing the covers perfectly; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a device, as hercinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral l indicates the headboard of the bed, to which is secured a bar 2 in a horizontal position and slightly below the upper surface of the mattress, the bar having perforations 3 at its ends for the insertion of fastening screws et, and having equidistant swells or bulges 5 merging smoothly into the thinner portions of the bar.
Loops 6 are formed at the ends of straps 7 by hooking a ring 8 at one end of the strap into a snap-hook 9, which slides adj ustably by a clamping-buckle 10 upon the strap, and the other ends of the straps are formed with narrow rings or eyes 11, which slide upon the diverging handles 12 of the clamps 13. The loops are slipped upon the bars and are held from sliding laterally by the swells when the clamps are attached to the bed-clothes and the straps are drawn tight, while they may slide freely upon the bar when they are loosened and disengaged from the bed-clothes. The clamps consist of two jaws 14, halved in or shouldered at their pivotal points, at which they are pivotally connected by means of a bolt 15, and have clamping portions 16 at their outer ends and oblique shoulders 17, with which they bear against the halved-in portions, the handles of the jaws crossing each other.
It will be seen that a piece of fabric in serted between the jaws of the clamps may beheld by forcing the jaws of the clamps together, which is done by forcing the crossing handles together, and as the rings slide upon the crossing handles and are of a less length than the space between the outer ends of the handles the rings will serve to draw the handles and jaws together when slid upon the handles toward their diverging ends.
Two straps 1S are secured to the side rails of the bed and have rings 23, clamping the handles of clamps 24, of the same construction as the other clamps.
When the device is to be used, the straps having the loops are adjusted upon the bar between two knobs or swells, each in such a position as to be able to engage the upper edge of the cover 25 with their clamps, and the straps are shortened or lengthened to suit the distance between the edge of the cover and the bar, whereupon the straps attached Vto the side rails of the bed have `their clamps secured to the side edges of the cover, and
are suitably shortened or lengt-henedito se cure the side edges of the cover, when the person under the cover can not throw the covers off during sleep, as they are held toward the head-board and toward the sides of the bed by the straps and clamps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a device for securing bed-covers, the combination, with the rod or bar having swells, of the straps having rings at each end, the sliding snap-loops secured to the rings at one end of the straps, and clamps connected to and operated by the rings at the other ends of said straps, said parts being arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I clailn the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROSA l-I. LOWE,
Witnesses:
J. A. WINTERMUTE, L. E. QUADE.
