J. B. STONE. DRESS FORM.
No. 412,994. v Patented 001;. 15, 1889 WINE 55.255;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. STONE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
DRESS-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,994, dated October 15, 1889.
Application filed March 18, 1889- Serial No. 303,671. (No model.)
of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Forms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement on dress-forms made of ribs supported from a central standard by braces.
The invent-ion consists in the peculiar and novel construction by which the hip portion of the dress-form is supported and adjusted from the top of the central standard, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is aview of my improved adjustable dress-form, showing the upper or hip braces hinged in a radial spider secured to the central standard and connected with a sliding block provided with a rack operated by a pinion at the upper end of the standard. Fig. 2 is a view of the radial spider to which the braces are hinged. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the hinged braces, the connectingstrips, the sliding block, the rack-bar connected with the sliding block, and the pinion for operating the same.
In the drawings similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In dress-forms as heretofore constructed it is diflicult, and in most cases impossible, to adjust the dress-form to a'dress without removing the dress from the form. To facilitate such adjustment as will best set off the dress while the dress is on the form is the object of this invention.
In the drawii'lgs, number4 indicates the central standard; 5, the lower radial braces connecting the vertical ribs 7 with the sliding or revolving block 6. The vertical ribs '7 are united and stiifened by the cross-ribs 8, pivotally connected with the vertical ribs at the hip portion of the dress-form, and are connected by a rivet and slot at the lower end of the vertical ribs.
9 indicates the adjustable waistband, one end of the band being provided with a button and the other end with a number of numbered button-holes. The hip-band 10 is also pro vided with a button and button-holes numbered as indicated in Fig. 1.
The braces 11 support the hip portion of the dress-form. One end of each of these braces is pivotally connected with the vertical ribs 7, the other ends of said braces being hinged to projections formed on the spider 12, the inner ends of the braces 11 being pivotally connected by means of the connectingstrips 13 with the sliding block 14s. From the sliding block 14E the rack-bar 15 extends up ward to the upper end of the central standard 4, where, in a suitable frame, the pinion 16 enters the toothed portion of the rack-bar. The pinion 16 is provided with a crank or other similar means for turning the pinion to raise or lower the sliding block 14, and thus adjust the ribs of the dress-form to the dress, even when the dress is on the form, and thereby show off the exact style and draping of the done on a form only approximately fitting the dress. Then the desired point of adjustment is reached, the clamp-screw 18 is used to secure the rack-bar and sliding block in place. This adjustment is in tended to be used within given limits and is independent of the further adjustment caused by raising or lowering the radial spider 12, to which the braces 11 are hinged, the said spider being secured to the central standard 4 by means of a clampscrew, as is indicated in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a dress-form, the combination, with the standard, the spider 12, the vertical ribs, and the hinged radial braces, of the block 14, connected with the radial braces by strips, the rack-bar 15, the pinion 16, the crank 17, and clamp 18, constructed to adjust the dress-form by raising or lowering the block, as described.
2. The combination, with the central standard, the vertical ribs, the waistband, and hipband of a dress-form, of radial braces pivotally secured to the vertical ribs at their outer ends, hinged on a spider secured to the central standard near their inner ends and connected by connecting-strips with 'a block sliding on the central standard, said sliding block provided with a rack operated by a pinion at or near the upper end of the dress-form to adjust the form, as described.
skirt to much better advantage than can be 3. The combination, with the standard 4, 8, the block 6, the radial braces 5, connecting the vertical ribs 7, the cross-ribs 8, the radial the vertical ribs With the block, the waistbraces 5, and block 6, of the radial braces 11, band 9, and hip-band 10, the spider 12,braces pivoted at their outer ends to the vertical ribs 11, the connecting-strips 13,the sliding block 5 hinged in the spider 12 and connected with 14, rack-bar 15, pinion 16, the crank 17, and I 5 the sliding block 14 by the strips 13, the block clamp-screw 18, as described.
14: being operated to adjust the form by the JOHN B. STONE. rack-bar 15, as described. WVitnessesz 4. A dress-form consisting of the central M. F. BLIGH,
