To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, PATRICK BROWNLEY, of St. John, in the county ofSt. John, Province of New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in J ou'rnal-Box'es; for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a "description 'suffi ciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in" the art or science towhich said invention appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming'part of this specification, in which--' Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a car journal-box provided with my improvement; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on line 00 w in Fig. 1.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of journal-boxes in which the journals are automatically lubricated; and it consists inv certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by allconversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body of thejournal-box, which is supported on the car in the usual manner, and B the axle. The axle is reduced at its outer end, forming the journal '0 between a shoulder 12 and annular flange 01.
lhe body A is preferably rectangular in cross-section, and to a bed-piece f in the top thereof is secured a bushing g, which bears upon the journal C. A longitudinally arranged partition h is secured within the box below the journal, forming a chamber D, for receiving waste or packing. The space between the' partition h and the bottom' 13 of the box forms an oil-reservoir G, hereinafter de scribed, the bottom 4} being inclined outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1.
A circular or nearly circularbox H is secured to the outer end of the bodyA bybolts Z,passing through lugs m on said body, the journalflange d projecting through an opening in the inner box-Wall. The box is provided with a door 13 in its outer face, and may be cast inv tegral with the body A, if preferred, instead of being bolted thereto. An arm 25 is secured centrally to the end of the journal 0, and is revolved thereby in the chamberoof the box H, said arm being provided with a forked head w, Fig. 2, the prongs of which may curve or slope laterally, after the manner of propeller-Wings. An opening 15 connects the packing-chamber D with the box-chamber 7), through which the packing may be passed, said'opening being closed by a door 16 at its outer end.
A longitudinally arranged inwardly inclined distributing-shelf 17 is secured within the body A at each side of the journal 0, an inwardly-inclined duct 18 leading from the chamber 12 of the box H onto each shelf 17.
In the use of my improvement the reservoir G is supplied with oil or other lubricant, a portion of which is discharged therefrom into the box H. As the axle revolves, the agitating-arm 15 rotates in the chamber 0) of said box. The forked head w of said arm carries the lubricant with it from the reservoir, and a portion thereof, clinging tothe walls of the chamber 1;, runs back into the ducts or gutters 18, thence it runs onto the shelves 17, and, as said shelves are inclined rearwardly as well as inwardly, the lubricant is thereby distributed continually onto the journal and used without it in many cases and still keep the journal sufficiently lubricated.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a journal-box of the character described, the combination of a body provided with a bushing in its upper portion, a horizontal partition below the ax1e-opening,form ing a packing-chamber and lubricant-reservoir, inwardly-inclined distributing-shelves above said packing-chamber, a box on the 5 outer end of said body, into which the reservoir opens, ducts leading from said box onto said shelves, and an arm secured to the journal and fitted to rotate in said box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
1o 2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body, a bushing bearing upon the axle-journal, a box in the outer end of said body provided with a door, a packingchamber in said body opening into said box,
a door for said chamber, a reservoir in the body opening into said box, ducts leading from said box onto inwardly-inclined distributing-shelves in the body, and a laterallyprojecting arm on said journal fitted to rotate in said box and raise the lubricant to said ducts, substantially as described.
3. In a journal-box, a body provided with a bushing for supporting it on an axle-journal, a box on said body provided with a door, an
oil-reservoir leading into said box, ducts leading from the box onto inclined shelves in the body for distributing the lubricant onto the journal, and an arm fixed to the outer end of the journal and rotating in said box, said 'arm having a forked head, whereby the lubricant from the reservoir may be conveyed to said ducts, substantially as described.
4. In a journal-box, a body provided with a bushing bearing on the axle-journal, a circu- 3 5 lar box on the outer end of said body provided with a door, a packing-chamber below said journal opening into said box, an oilreservoir opening into said box and provided with an outwardlyinclined bottom, ducts leading from said box onto inwardly-inclined 4o distributing-shelves in said body, and an arm projecting laterally from the outer end of said journal and fitted to rotate in said box, said arm having a forked head provided with curved prongs, whereby-oil from the reservoir may be conveyed to said ducts, substantially as described.
5. In a journal-box, the axle-journal 0, provided with the flange d, in combination with the body A, having the bushing g, the box H on said body, the reservoir G, opening into said box, the inclined shelves 17, the ducts 18, leading from said box to said shelves, and the arm 25, secured to said journal, all being arranged to operate substantially as described.
6. In a journal-box, the combination of the axle B, the body A, having the bushing 9 bearing on the journal 0, the box H, provided with the inclined bottom i and door 19, the partitions h, forming packing-chamber D and reservoir G, opening into said box, the door 16 for said chamber, the ducts 18, leading from said box to inclined distributing-shelves in said body, and the arm if, provided with the forked head 10, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
