' G. D. BURTON.
CIRCUIT CLOSER P OR SIGNALINC- APPARATUS.
No'. 412,460. Patented 001;. s, 1889.
www@ UNITEDV STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE nl BURTON, OE NEw IPswIorI, NEw HAMPSHIRE.
CIRCUIT-CLOSER FOR-SIGNALING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.1412,460, dated October 8, 1889. i Application iiled July 8, 1886. Serial No. 207,150. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D.v BURTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Ipswich, in the county of Hillsborough, in the State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful improvements in circuitclosers for signaling apparatus for railwaytrains, and for use in other places where such signals are desirable, of which the following is so full, clear, and exact a description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make. and use they same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawing, in which my circuit-closer is shown in section on an enlarged scale, the battery, wires, and bell being shown in elevation on a smaller scale.
The obj ect of my invention is to provide an improved device whereby the circuits of signaling systems may be closed, such circuitcloser being especially designed for use in train-signaling, but being well adapted for use in any system where an alarm is sounded or a signal made by the closing of an electrical circuit.
Referring to the drawing by letters, A represents a battery or other source of electrical energy, and B C are the wires forming the circu it. These wires lead from the battery to circuit-closer through any suitable bell or other alarm, as at D. The wires are secured in the binding-posts E F in any well-known manner, and have at their terminals two plates G H, said terminals being secured at their outer ends by screws-I J, which pass through said outer ends into the binding-posts, as shown. The inner ends of the terminals are secured to a' central tubular post K, made of insulating material, by screws m j. Between these terminals and said insulatingfposu'and sethe end of the plate M being bent at a point farther removed from the post than the bend of plate L, so that normally the ends of L and M will be held out of contact with each other.
N is a rod having a slot n therethrough, which the aforesaid contact-plates L M pass through, as clearly shown, said rod being provided with a suitable operating-handle-as, for instance,a ring O or a cord P. The wires being electrically connected through the binding-posts and terminals with these contactplates, the circuit will be completed when these contact-plates are brought together by pulling up the rod N and the alarm sounded ductors leading therefrom, of a circuit-closer consisting of a frame having an insulated post, to which the terminals of th'e circuits are connected, the`one terminal overlapping the other and the two fitting in a notched rod, said rod terminating in a ring or handle.
2. As anew article of manufacture, a circuitcloser consisting of a frame having an insulat-ed post, to which the terminals of the circuits are connected, the one terminal overlapping the other and the two fitting in a notched rod, said rod terminating in a ring or handle.
In testimony whereof I afd-X my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of June, 1886.
GEO. D. BURTON. 'Witnesses:
