UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ELON E. CASE, OF NOBLESVILLE, INDIANA.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,711, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filedNovember 15, 1838. Serial No. 290,933, (No modeli) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELON E. CASE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Noblesville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and do I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representa tion of this invention and is a longitudinal section. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are details showing end, side, and top views of portions of the elliptic spirals; and Fig. 5 is a plan View of my improved bed-bottom.
This invention has relation to bed-bottoms; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, one-half only of the bedframe is shown, both sides being alike in construction.
The letterA designates the frame of the bed-bottom, which is rectangular in form.
B is an adjustable transverse bar at one end, and O is a fixed transverse bar at the other end.
To the side rails D, near one end of the bed-bottom, is applied the head-rest F, suitably held in position.
Il represents the spring-bottom, which COH.
sists of a series of connected transverse elliptie springs K. These springs are so formed that each elliptic whirl or turn 0 has at its ends the connection-oifsets (Z, which are slight extensions of the elliptical form at each end, adapted to provide slight stops-or shoulders e, as indicated in the drawings, and designed to enable these elliptical whirls to retain their upright position under pressure when the entire bed-bottom is under tension. The end spring of the series are attached to the transverse bars B and C of the bed-bottom by passing these bars through the springs from end to end, as indicated.
The bar B is movable and adjustable, being provided with threaded bolts Z and nuts m, adapted to operate in connection with the angle-irons L, which are secured to the ends of the rails D D of the frame.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A bed-bottom consisting of the transverse series of elliptic springs, the end bars 13 and 0, extending through the end spirals, and the side rail having the angle-irons, and adjusting devices for the bar B, consisting of the nut-ted screw-threaded bolts engaging said angleirons, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my sign atn rein presence of two witnesses.
ELON CASE.
Titnesses:
JOSEPH R. GRAY, G. W. SEYMOUR.
