SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,484, dated September 24, 1889. Application filed June 12, 1889- Serial No, 314,032; (No model.)

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM P. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bear Wallow, in the county of Barren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Guides; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of attachments for harnesses which are intended for use in holding in place the bridle or checkrein and preventing the same from falling down at the sides of thehorses neck, and thus frequently becoming entangled in the mane of the animal. The object of the invention is to generally improve upon the construction, cheapen, and render more durable and efficient in operation this class of appliances.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar combinations and in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and

then specifically defined in the appendedclaim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device,

constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown as adapted for use in connection with a breast-collar harness, a portion of the harness being shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the means employed in attaching it to an ordinary hame-harness, the collar being indicated in dotted lines.

Reference being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body of the device, which is of metal and in a single casting, and when desired may be plated or otherwise suitably ornamented, in accordance with the taste of the manufacturer.

B is an opening formed within the upper part of the plate A at substantially its longitudinal center, which opening is designed for the passage of the checkrein of the harness when an overcheck-rein is used, and upon either side of the opening B hooks O C are provided for the reception of the checkreins of other forms in common use.

When the device is used in connection with a breast-collar harness, the same is securely. buckled to the shoulder-strap of the harness directly above the shoulders of the horse by means of the buckle D, (shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings) and if to be used with a harneharness the device is secured in place by passing either a-cord or strap through the loops E E, (shown in Fig. 2,) which cord or strap is tied or otherwise secured to the upper part of the hames, as will be readily understood.

It will be seen that by the use of a device of the character above described the rein will at all times be kept straight and in proper place, and that the possibility of the reins being caught beneath the ends of the thills will be avoided.

The gist of my invention resides in its simplicity, being of a single piece of metal of uniform thickness, which may be readily stamped into form, and when completed being less complicated, and hence more durable and less liable to injury and breakage in use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described device for securing in place the bridle or cheekreins of harnesses, the same consisting of the metallic plate A, formed of a single piece of metal and provided on its upper side at substantially its longitudinal center with an opening for the passage of an overcheck-rein and upon either side of said opening with hooks O, for use in securing in place the reins used in connection with hame-harnesses, and having at its lower edge means for securing the same to the harness,
