UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL C. LAFFERTY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE VESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TERMINAL PLUG ATTACHMENT FOR FLEXIBLE ELECTRIC CORDS.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,153, dated september 17, 188e.
V Application led September 5, 1887. Serial No.248,818. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. LAEEERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the countjv of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Terminal Plug Attachments `for Flexible Electric Cords, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication.
My invention relates to iiexible cords and plugs designed for making the connection upon electric switch-boards, and more especially to the connection of the cord with the plug.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional view of a cord and its terminal plug attached together in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 shows the plug with the rubber handle removed, the clamps being separated to admit the end of the spirally-wound flexible conducting-wire.
Like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference in the different gures.
The clamp consists of the pieces a and b, attached to the rear end of the metallic stem of the plugA by the pin or pivot c. Handle d is provided on the outside with rubber e, the inner portion being metal, preferably brass, which is tapped out to correspond to the thread f, provided on the stein of the plug. The plug-handle beyond the female threadis bored out, so that the opening will be slightly 3 5 tapering, thusncorresponding to the shape of thepivot'ed piecesbr jaws a b when closed over the cord, as shown in Fig. l. In order to attach the cord to the plug the handle d is slipped over the cord, and the tip of the 4o cord is then placed between the jaws, s o that the insulating covering will come between the jaws. The handle is then placed over the jaws and screwed down over the thread f. Owing to the shape of the jaws and that 45 of the bore of the handle, the jaws are inade to firmly clasp the core and hold at the same time the covering of the cord when the handle is lin place, as shown in Fig. 1. Plugs may thus be readily connected and disconnected 5c from their cords as occasion may require.
I therefore do not limit my invention to the precise construction shown, but claim, broadly- The combination, with the projecting core 55 of an electric cord and the insulating covering thereof, of the clasp consisting of two jaws pivoted to the stein of the plug and pressed firmly against the said core and covering by the handle placed over the said jaws 6o and screwed upon the thread provided on the stem, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 15th day of July, A. D. 1887.
SAMUEL C. LAFFERTY.
