(No Model.)
A BTGHTER UPRIGHT PIANO ACTION.
No. 408,852. Patented Aug. 13, 1889.
IVTO
A INTO/MW WW P WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH RICHTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UPRlGHT-PIANO ACTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,852, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed January 25, 1889. Serial No. 297,636. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADOLPH RICHTER, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upright-Piano Actions, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a piano action having a contrivance for throwing back the hammer after the same has struck the string, which contrivance can be adjusted to throw the hammer backward more or less rapidly.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are vertical transverse sectional views of piano-actions provided with my improve ment, the parts being shown in different positions.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The hammer A is secured to the hammerbutt B, pivoted to the hannner-rail O in the usual manner, and when at rest the hammer rests upon the hammer-rest D. The hammer is operated in the usual manner by the jack E, that acts on the liamlnenbutt, and is pivoted to the jack bed or lever F, which in turn is pivoted to the jack-rail G. The damperlever H and back-catch J are of the usual constructiou. On a rail K a lever L. is pivoted to hang downward, and the swinging end of said lever is felted and adapted to act on that edge of the hammer-butt facing the string I. The lever L is provided with a lug M, having an offset M, on which a collar or other projection N can act that is secured to the reciprocating red O, the lower end of which is connected with a frame I, mounted 011 the jack bed or lever F, and vertically adjustable on the same by means of a screw Q, the head R of which is cogged or toothed on its rim, thus permitting of inserting a rack for engage ment with said teeth for the purpose of turning the screw, and thus adjusting the frame P, and thereby adjusting the rod 0 and its collar N in relation to the lug M on the lever L. The upper end of the rod 0 is guided in an aperture or notch of the plate S on the rail K.
The operation is as follows: When the parts are in the position of rest, as in Fig. 1, and the key is depressed, the hammer A is thrown toward the string I, as indicated by the arrow 00 in Fig. 1. As the jack bed or lever F moves upward, the red 0 also moves upward, and its collar or projection N, striking the offset M of the lug M, throws the lower end of the lever L in the direction of the arrow :0 Fig. 1, and said lower end of the lever L, acting on the hammer-butt l3, swings the hammer in the direction from the strings that is, throws the hammer back without the use of springs or analogous device, and opcrates positively. The rod 0 can. easily be so adjusted as to cause the lever L to throw the hammer back sooner or later, as may be necessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a piano-action, the combination, with a hammer and jack bed or lever, of a pivoted lever acting on the hammer and operated from the jack-lever, substantially as set forth.
2. In a piano-action, the combination, with a hammer and jack, of a pivoted lever adjacent to the hammer, and a rod operated from the jack-lever and acting on said lever, substantially as set forth.
3. In a piano-action, the combination, with a hammer and jack, of a lever pivoted adjacent to the hammer, and an adjustable rod connected with the jack-lever and serving to operate said lever, substantially as set forth.
4. In a piano-action the combination, with a hammer and jack, of a lever pivoted adjajent to the hammer, a projection on said 1ever, and a rod connected with a jack-lever and acting on said projection, substantially as set forth.
5. In a piano-action, the combination, with a hammer and jack, of a lever pivoted adja cent to the hammer, a lug on said lever, a rod acting on said lug, and an adjustable frame 011 the jack-lever, with which frame said rod is connected, substantially as set forth.
6. In a piano-action,the combination, with a hammer and jack, of a lever pivoted adjacent to the hammer, a lug on said hammer, a
