Description

PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD II. ROGERS, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
STAMP-CANCELER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,857, dated December S, 1868.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. ROGERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stamp- (lanceling Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a vertical central section of my invention.
This invention relates to a fountain canceling device, one which will contain a quantity otinlr, so as to supply the device for an indefinite number ot impressions and obviate the necessity of applying the device to an inkpad when an impression is to be given.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a perforated stamp-plate attached to a hollow handle or ink-reservoir, in the. upper part of which a plunger works, said plunger being directly over a diaphragm and attached to an arbor or spindle on which a spiralspring is placed, said spring being placed in a suitable case which is encompassed by a gage to regulate the distance ot' the movement ofthe spindle and plunger, all being arranged as hereinafter Ashown to efi'ect the desired end.
To enable those skilled in the art` to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents an ink-reservoir, which may be constructed ot' sheet metal, ot" cylindrical form at its lower end, z s shown at a., and gradually expanding in diameter with a curve or swell, b, from a upward toits upper end. The upper part ot' this ink-reservoir A is provided with an internal screw-thread, and it is screwed on a metallic screw-ring, c, which is titted on the lower end ot a wooden chamber, B, which has a horizontal partition, d, with a hole at its center to allow a spindle or arbor, (l, to pass through and work loosely. The lower end oi the spindle or arbor (l has a plunger, D, attached to it, and below this plunger there is adiaphragm, E, constructed of india-rubber or other suitable elastic material. This diaphragm is secured tothclower endotthe wooden chamber B by means of the screw-ring c, which is fitted over the edge ofthe diaphragm on the lower end of I3 and lirnily secures the former in position.
F represents a cylindrical case, which may be of wood, and is connected with the partition d conceutrically with the spindle or arbor C, the latter passing through the case F, and
having a spiral spring, G, upon it, the lower of which bears upon the partition d, and the upper end bears against a iange at the lower end of a tube, e, on the upper endet" the spindle or arbor (l. The case Fis encompassed by a metal band,f, which has a screw cut on its exterior to receive an internal screw cut in a tube, g, on which a wooden case, H, is placed, the lower part ot' the latter fitting in the upper part, of the wooden chamber B, above the partition-plate d.
I is a handle or flat pressure-plate, which is provided with a. stem, h., the latter being iitted in the tube e ou the spindle or arbor O.
J represents the stamp-plate, which is provided with a rim, i, to screw on the lower part, a, ot' theink-reservoir A. This stampplate is perforated in any desired form.
Thcdevicc is used as follows: 'Iheink-reservoir A is su: plied with a requisite quantity of printers ink, and when the stamp-plate is applied to the stamp to be canceled the operator presses down the plate I, and thereby forces down the plunger I) and diaphragm E, which causes the ink to be forced into the apertures in the stamp plate J and upon the stamp, leaving the impression on the latter. When the pressure is removed from the plate I, the plunger D rises under the action of the spring G, and the diaphragm also rises under its own elasticity, and the device is ready fora succeeding application. The case H serves as a gage to regulate the movement of the spindle or arbor O and plunger D, and thereby vary the pressure ofthe latter on the ink in the reservoir A, and also enable the plunger to descend farther as the ink in A is used or expended. ly screwing u p the case H the movementot' the plunger is shortened and lengthcned by screwing it down.
I would remark that the stamp-plate J may be perforated so as to make any desired contiguration on the stamp.
Having thus described my invention, what [claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The inlrreservoirA, with perforated stampplate J attached to its lower end, in connecion with the plunger D and diaphragm E, either or both, and with or without the gage H.
