Description

(No Model.) Y
D. E. TERRILL.
BILL 0F PARE AND ADVERTISING GASTBR.
No. 406,548. Patented July 9, 1889.
EEE- @im I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DELANOY E. TERRILL, OF OOPENHAGEN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR. OF ONE- HALF TO JUDSON F. HADCOOK, OF SAME PLACE.
BILLOF-FARE AND ADVERTISING CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,548, dated July 9, 1889.
Application tiled March 19,1889. Serial No. 303,847. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, DELANCY E. TERRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Copenhagen, in the countyof Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-of-Fare and Advertising Casters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters'and figures of reference marked thereon, which forln a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in casters for bills of fare or advertising purposes; and it has for its obj ect to provide a neat and ornamen tal caster suitable for use upon hotel and restaurant tables, the said caster being so constructed as to present a series of openings within each of which may be displayed bills of fare or advertising matter of any kind, the same being upon removable and interchangeable strips of wood or other material adapted for t-he purpose, the said strips being arranged within suit-able trays adapted to be placed within the body of the caster in such a manner as to display the faces of the strips through the openings above mentioned. V
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in theV peculiar combinations, and in the novel conparts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forma part of this speciiication, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawingsl Fig-ure l represents a perspective view of a bill-of-fare and advertising caster constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is aperspective detail of one of the trays removed.
lower end and hasdepending from the lower 4face of its top the centrally-located vertical tube B, the upper end of which tube is eX- tended through and terminates a short distance above the upper face of the top plate C of the frame.
D is the standard, provided at its lower end with a suitable base D2. This standard is round in cross-section and of such diameter as to permit the free passage of its upper end within the depending' tube B, and the upper end of the said standard which projects a short'distance above the top plate C is screwthreaded to receive the handle E, which is provided with an internal screw-threaded opening a, as shown. A lug or shoulder Diis provided upon the standard, against the upper face of which shoulder bears the lower end of the tube B, and the frame is thus prevented from sliding down upon said standard. The lower face of the top plate C is provided upon its outer edges with depending flanges F, and at a short'distance from and parallel with said iianges with the additional iianges G. The
central portion of each of the faces of the body of the caster are open, leaving a narrow margin h adjacent to said openings and the vertical corners of the frame are truncated, thus providing the spaces h2, which are suitably ornalnented. The upper inner edges of the lower rim of the frame are provided with the upwardly-extended iiange c, for a purpose which will presently appear.
I-I is a shallow tray made of sheet metal, one of the longitudinal sides of said tray being partially cut away, as shown at c2, and having at its upper end a spring d, 011e end of which spring is secured to the said end of the tray,
IOO
the spring being extended across the outer face of the end and terminating near the opposite corner of the tray. Vithin this tray are placed a series of strips f, the faces of which strips may have printed upon them articles constituting a bill of fare, or, if preferred, they may be employed for advertising purposes. A plate of glass or other trans parent substance g is employed to cover the faces of the strips within the tray.
In operation the strips to be displayed are first properly arranged within the several trays, the glass plates are placed in position, and the trays are then passed vertically through the open bottom of the frame and are 'retained in place by the inner flanges G and c at the top and bottom of the frame, as will be readily understood, the bearing of the spring d against the lower face of the upper plate C Serving to prevent the lower end of the tray from being accidentally displaced, it being necessary to lift the said tray against the tension ofthe spring in removingit from the frame.
XVhile I intend the caster described for use upon the tables of hotels and restaurants for indicating bills of fare, it is at once evident that it is equally Well adapted for use in dis-l playing advertising matter of any kind. Then employed upon restaurant-tables it Will be found advantageous in many cases to use one or more of the display-faces of the caster for displaying the bill of fare, while the lremaining faces of the caster are used in displaying business-cards, as I have shown in the drawings.
Having thus describedV my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the base, the standard secured thereto at its lower end and at its upper end screw-threaded, as shown, and the handle having internal threads to engage the threaded end of the standard, of the body having rigid therewith the central downwardlyextending tubes B sleeved on the standard, the shoulder D3 on the standard to forni a stop for the tube, and the blocks in said body, substantially as shown and described.
2. Thehereindeseribedbill-offa1e and advertising caster comprising in combination a standard, a body pivoted upon said standard, a handle secured to the end of the standard above the body, and two or more series of interchangeable blocks having printed matter upon their faces, trays for receiving the blocks, and openings in the faces of the body of the caster for displaying the blocks within the trays, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DELANCY E. TERRILL.
