UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLORANCE J. D. CHAPPELL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF FORTY-NINE ONE-HUNDREDTHS TO WILBUR H. RIDDLE, OF SAME PLACE.
CANOPY-SUPPORT FOR CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,389, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed September 8, 1888. Serial No. 284,926. '(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORANCE J. D. CHAP- PELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canopy-Top Supporters for Childrens Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a support on a childs carriage for a canopy or umbrella.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the body of a childs carriage with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear view of same. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the side clamps, larger scale. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of one side. clamp on the line 5 5. Fig. 6 shows two views of one of the plates belonging to the side clamp. Figs. 7 and 8 show the clamp on the bow which supports the umbrella-handle.
The body A of the carriage may be of any known or desired kind. I provide two clamps B and secure one at each side of the body, as shown. These two clamps hold the two ends 0 of a bow C. The bow C is vertically adjustable by the said two ends 0 sliding endwise through the two side clamps B, so that the top at of the bow may have a higher or lower position above the body A. Those parts e f of the clamps which hold the bow turn on a pivot 6, whereby the bow may be tilted forward or back. The handle 9 of the umbrella or parasol G is clamped to the top d of the bow by a clamp H, which latter is movable along the bow to any part thereof, so as to be more over one side of the body than the other. It will thus be seen that the umbrella may have, in connection with the bow, any desired adjustment or position above the carriagebody to meet the requirements of the case.
The clamp B comprises a bar 2', with bent ends 2'', which are riveted or otherwise secured to the body, while the central part of the bar between the bends stands off from the body.
This bar has a central flat face j and a hole k.
A plate f has a flat face Z, a central opening m, and a concave groove n, extending diametrically across the face which is occupied by the bow end 0. A pivot-bolt c has an eye 6, through which the end 0 of the bow passes. The nut 0 screws on the pivot-bolt and draws it and the bow end 0 hard against the concave groove n of the plate f, and the flat face I of this plate hard against the flat face j of the 5 5 bar 1'. The friction of these parts when thus binding on each other will sustain the bow wherever it may be set.
The clamp H on the top cl of the bow is made fast to the bow by a set-screw 19. (See Figs. 7 and 8.) This clamp has a socket q to receive the handle 9 of the umbrella. The usual sleeve-runner r on the handle will set upon the socket q, and the usual spring 8 011 the handle will take under the said socket, and thereby the handle will be retained. This device allows of the umbrella being readily attached and as readily removed.
Having described my invention, I claim The. combination, with the carriage-body, of the two clamps B, constructed as described, consisting of the bars z', the central flat plates f, bearing against the inner flat faces j of the said bars and having concave grooves 71., the bow ends fitting in said grooves, the eyes 6, through which the ends of the bow pass, the pivot-bolt c and clamp-nut 0, and the clamp H and set-screw, whereby the handle of the parasol or canopy is adjustably fastened to the bow, the whole being arranged so that the So parasol can be adjusted in any desired position with respect to the body of the carriage, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FLORANCE J. D. CI-IAPPELL.
