Description
W. W. MARSTDN.
Cartridge.
' Patented Nov 3,- 1863.
Nv PETERS. PHOTO'UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. MARSTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRIMED METALLIC CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,490, dated November 3, 1863.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W.MARsToN, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, a certain new and useful Improvement in Cartridges and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved cartridge, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Revolving cylinders have heretofore been constructed with chambers to contain cartridges inserted from the forward end, and from which the cartridge case is removed after the explosion by means of a small ramrod introduced through a hole at the rear of each chamber. This mode of using cartridges by inserting them into the forward end of the chamber or short barrel being well known, and there having been several fire-arms of this general character constructed, a further de' scription of a fire-arm in which my cartridge can be used is rendered unnecessary.
Cartridges have heretofore been made with a metal cylindrical case, with a nipple projecting from the rear end, in which is contained the detonating or fulminating material. In the manufacture of thischaracter of cartridgecase difficulty is experienced in pressing up the hollow teat or nipple from the metal composing the base of the cartridge, and difliculty also exists in filling such nipple with the fulminating material, because the same has to be passed through the entire length of the we to reach such nipple.
The nature of my said invention consists in a separate flanged nipple containing the fulminating material, in combination with a cartridge-case having a hole in the base, through which said nipple is introduced, and projects at the rear, to be struck upon by the hammer of the fire-arm, while in the cylinder or breech of any ordinary fire-arm adapted to this character of cartridge.
In the drawing I have represented a cartridge three or four times the dimensions of those usually required, in order that the parts may appear more clearly.
a-is the cartridge-case, of any usual size or shape, receiving the detached flanged nipple b, the end 1 of which passes through a hole in the breech part 2 of the case a, while the flange 3 remains inside of the case a. 0 represents the powder, and d the ball, as usual.
JIhe flanged nipple b is to be formed of metal, gutta-percha, indiarubber, or other suitable material, (metal, however, is generally preferable;) and said nipple may be struck up by dies out of around piece of metal, or be formed in a manner similar to percussion-caps.
The detonate or fulminating material, of any usual character, is introduced in this flanged nipple with great ease, and may be varnished,
or a small piece of paper introduced to cover such fulminate, and said flanged'nipple may be placed at the end of a guide-rod, so that the nipple part may be easily directed through the hole in the case, after which the powder and ball are to be introduced, as usual.
The flange of the nipple, forming a second thickness at the base of the cartridge, renders the case stronger at this point and less liable to blow back when the explosion takes place.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The flanged nipple 1), containing the detonating material, in combination with the cartridge-case, having a perforated base for the passage of said nipple, as'specified,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 9th day of September, A. D. 1863.
w. W. MAnsToN.
