Description
(No Model.) v r J. H. KNAUS.
, FURNITURE DRAWER.
No. 404,790. L Patented June 4, 1889.
UNITED STATES Y PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. KNAUS, OF FAYETTE, MISSOURI.
FURNITURE-DRAWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,790, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed January 17, 1889. Serial No. 296,582. (No modeli) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HENRY KNAUS, a resident of Fayette, in the county of Howard and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture- Drawers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in furniture-drawers; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a furniture-drawer embodying my improvements, the drawer being closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the drawer open..
The drawer A operates in a case B, which may be part of a bureau or any other article of furniture.
To the rear side of the case, at a point slightly above the drawer, is secured a block 0 by a screw D. To the inner side of the rear portion E of the drawer, at the upper edge of the same, are secured a pair of cleats F, which have recesses G in their upper edges. H represents a bar which his and is rabbeted in the said recess G, being thereby firmly secured to the drawer, and at the same time rendered readily detachable therefrom,
' and in one end of said bar is a longitudinal slot I.
K represents a bar which has one end pivoted under the block 0 by means of a pivotal screw L. Under the opposite end of said bar is secured a block or plate M, which bears on the slotted end of the bar H, and a pivotal screw works in the slot I and engages the bar K and passes through the plate M, and thereby the said bar K is loosely connected to the said bar H.
A link-rod O has one end pivoted to the bar H, and has its opposite end pivoted directly under the center of the bar K. IVhen the drawer is closed, the screw is in the outer end of the slot I. When the drawer is opened, the bar K swings outward and causes its screw to traveltoward the inner end of the slot, and by pressing on the link-rod 0 causes the latter to exert outward pressure 011 the inner corner of the drawer farthest from the slotted end of bar H, and hence an equal pressure is exerted on both ends of the drawer, and the latter is prevented from binding in the case, as will be readily understood. When the screw reaches the inner end of the slot, the drawer can be moved outward no farther, and hence there is no danger of accidentally pulling the drawer entirely out from the case. I hen the drawer is moved in, the screw travels toward the outer end of the slot and reaches the same at the instant that the face of the drawer is flush with the front side of the case, thereby serving as a stop to prevent the drawer from being pushed inward too far.
It will be understood that the block 0 may be secured to the front side of the case above the drawer, or that it may be secured to the case under the drawer, and the location of the bars H and K and of the connecting-link changed accordingly without affecting the operation of the invention or in any wise departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with the case and drawer, of the bar K, pivotally connected at one end to a fixed point in the case and having the pin or screw at its free end, the bar H, secured to the drawer and having the slot I at one end engaged by the pin or screw, and the link-rod connecting the opposite end of the bar H with the center of the bar K, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the case and the drawer, of the cleats F, secured to the latter, the bar H, rabbeted in recesses in the upper edges of said cleats and having the slot I at one end, the bar K, pivotally connected at one end to a fixed point in the case and having the pin or screw at its outer end working in the slot I, and the link-rod connected to the end of bar H opposite said slot, and also connected to the center of bar K, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
JOSEPH H. KNAUS.
Witnesses SOHUYLE DURYEE, W. O. KNAUS.
