SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,444, dated June 4, 1889. Application filed Marcli25, 1889. Serial No. 304,691. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY STEDDOM, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ire-Weaving Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to weaving devices for wiring wood, making thatched roofs and similar articles; and it consists in various features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved weaving apparatus; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4, views illustrating eertaindetails of construction.
In using or carrying out my invention I first erect two posts A and B at a suitable distance apart, and to one of said posts I attach a thribble-swivel, to which the ends of the wires 0 are secured. The opposite ends of the wires are secured to a wire or rope D, which passes over a lug or pin E on post B, and to the free end of the rope D is secured a weight F, which maintains a con stant tension on the wire 0.
G indicates a block grooved on its edges so as to receive the wires 0 0, between which it is inserted, said block also having a central opening 6 to receive a T-shaped twister H, which, being fiat where it passes through the block, slides freely back and forth through the latter, but does not turn relatively thereto. The twister H comprises a mainstem a and a cross-bar b, the ends of the cross-bar being provided with wooden handles 0, by which the twister may be readily turned. At the point where the cross-bar joins the main stem the twister is provided with two grooves d done on each side of the main stemwhieh receive the wire to be twisted.
The operation is as follows: The ends of the wires or cords to be twisted are attached at opposite ends to the swivel and to the tension device, and a paling (or bunch of straw or other article to be bound by the wire) inserted between the separated strands. Hold the paling and turn the spreader-block, crossing the wires next to the paling, then draw the twister up into the crotch, as shown in dotted lines, so that the wires will seat themselves in the grooves (Z d, and then turn or twist the wires so as to make one complete turn or twist. The twister is then returned to its normal position, another paling inserted, and the wires twisted as before.
Of course it is not necessary that posts be erected specially for carrying out this invention, as it is apparent that the ends of wires or cords to be twisted may be secured to any other fixtures.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The block G, in combination with the twister H, movable through the block.
2. The block G, having its edges grooved 'to receive the wires to be twisted, in combination with the twister H, movable through the I block.
3. In combination with block G, having an orifice e, twister H, provided with stem a, cross-bar b, and with grooves cl (1 in the crossbar.
4. In combination with block G, having an orifice e and grooved on its edges, as shown, twister H, provided with an angular stem a to fit the orifice c, all substantially as shown, whereby the twister is permitted to move lengthwise through the block, but notto turn independently thereof.
5. The twister H, provided with a stem a and handles 0 c, in combination with a block provided with an orifice e, to receive the stem.
6. An apparatus for uniting wires to palings, &'c., comprising apost A, having a swivel, a post B, provided with a tension device, a block G, adapted to be inserted between the separated strands, and a T-shaped twister movable lengthwise through the block.
