CRANK-WRIST AND BOXING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,341, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed April 20, 1888. Serial No. 271,297. (ModeL) I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER H. CASTLE, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crank-Wists and Boxin gs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of crank-wrists and boxings, and is intended to prevent lateral motion of such wrists and undue wear of the bearing parts connected therewith, and is an improvement upon-the device shown in United States Letters Patent No. 338,482, issued to me March 23, 1886, and Canadian Letters Patent No. 26,891, issued to myself and others June 6, 1887. The engine for which my improvement is designed is fully shown and described in those Letters Patent, and reference is hereby made to them for a fuller description thereof. As described in the Letters Paten t before referred to, the crank-wrist is inclined at an angle to the axis of the crank-shaft, and the connecting-rod is joined to such erank-wristby means of trunnions and the bisected crank-boxing, forming practically a universal joint and permitting a free oscillatory movement of the rod in either direction, and also its vertical movement, without friction. I have found, however, upon further trial, that by grooving this crank-wrist and the boxing that surrounds it a much better result is obtained, all lateral motion of the crank-box being thereby prevented, and this is the main feature of my invention described in the present application.
Another feature of my invention is in forming the half of the crank-boxing integral with the trunnions, also with circular plates extending around the trunnions, having flanges or rings which engage with grooves formed in the inner sides of the halves of the connecting-rod.
Figure 1 represents a detail top plan View of the crank-boxing. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same, also showing the cranks. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of Fig. 1 on the line 00 00 Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section of Fig. 1 on the line y y,
showing also a vertical section of a part of .the two-part connection-rod looked over the trunnions of the crank-box.
In detail the crank-shaft cs is provided with counter-weights cw and a crank-wrist, c,whose peripheryis annularly grooved in the manner shown in Fig. 2. This wrist is surrounded by Babbitt-metal boxing hm, which has grooves to correspond with those in the crank-wrist. These are inclosed in the crank-boxings cb, which, as shown in Fig. 3, are made in two partsa lower rectangular piece and an upper irregular-shaped piece which is formed integral with the trunnions w, and has circular plates with rings or flanges f on their outer faces around the trunnions, these projections moving in corresponding grooves formed in the inner sides of the connecting-rod r r. These circular flanges may or may not be used with the annularly-grooved crank-wrist; but I think they are preferable, giving a wider bearing of the parts in the sides of the bisected rods r r, and, even though there may a little more friction, yet the increased bearing-surface insures greater durability.
The crank-boxing ch is preferably formed are simply for strengthening the parts, asoilholes mustbe bored through these for lubricating the crank-wrist. My present invention therefore consists in making the crank-wrist annularly grooved instead of plain, as shown in my former Letters Patent, and in adding the circular flanges f to the disks of the trunnion w, and making corresponding grooves in the halves of the connecting-rodrr as shown in Fig. 3. The connection thus made between the rod and the crank-shaft, as willbe readily seen, is practically that of a universal joint, and this allows the peculiar motion of the trunk-piston inits cylinder which is described in my former Letters Patent.
What I claim herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A crank-driving shaft having an annularly-grooved crank-wrist whose central line is set at an angle to the line of bearings, bisected crank-boxings in which said crank-wrist is journaled, provided with circular flanges having annular projections for en gaging with corresponding grooves inthe halves of the conwith small ribs 190, as shown in Fig. 2, which.
necting-rod, and a connecting-rod formed in two parts, its lower part adapted to lock over the trunnions of the crank-boxings, all combined substantially as shown and described.
2. A crank-drivin shaft for steam-engines, provided with an annularly-grooved crankwrist journaled' in bisected crank-boxings provided with similar grooves, such crankwrist set at an angle to the line of bearings and adapted to conform to the amount of oscillation necessary to be given the piston, substantially as shown and described.

4. A crank-driving shaft for steam-engines, having an annularlygrooved crank -wrist whose central line is set at an angle to the line of bearings and journaled in a bisected grooved crank-boxing provided with circular flanges having annularprojections fittinginto the grooves in the halves of the connectingrod, in combination with such connecting-rod, substantially as shown and described.
5. A crank-driving shaft for steam engines, having an annnlarlygrooved crank -wrist whose central line is set at an. angle to the line of bearings,in combination with a crankboxing having corresponding grooves and provided with trunnions formed integral with one section thereof, substantially as shown and described.
