UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS R. FERRALI, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE BOSTON AND LOCKPORT BLOCK COMPANY, OF NEV JERSEY.
PU LLEY-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,932, dated May 28, 1889. Application filed February 26, 1889. Serial No. 301.202. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS R. FERRALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invenied new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pulley-blocks, and particularly to that class of blocks terme( stiff swivel, and having a hook or eye journaled to one end of such block, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and desczibed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a sectional side elevation of the improved block. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section thereof; and Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line A B, shown in Fig. l.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the diiferent parts of the drawings.
The invention is particularly designed for double or multiple blocks, with two or more sheaves,it being constructed as follows:
a a represent the check'or side pieces, and a represents middle check, as is usual in multiple blocks.
b l) and b b represent, respectively, the upper and lower end pieces, as usual, which parts may be of wood or metal, as may be desired, without departing from the essence of my invention.
On the upper end of the block rests, and is secured by means of bow-straps hereinafter to be described, the metal head c, in one piece, with which Vis made the lateral bars or saddle-piecesA c c', adapted to receive the bows or semicircular portions d d of the bow-straps d (l, as shown. The bow-straps d d pass downward through recesses made on the inside of the respective check-pieces a a and outside of the center piece or division, a', as shown in the drawings, said bow-straps passing downward far enough to receive the sheave-spin dle e, that passes through perforations made in saidbow-straps,the ch eek-pieces, and center piece.V On said spindle or bolt e are loosely journaled the sheaves f f, in any ordinary or suitable manner, with or without anti-friction rollers, according to the quality or construction of said sheaves, as may be desired. The end pieces, Z) Z), b b, are riveted or otherwise firmly secured to and between the center and check pieces, as usual.
To the metal head cis journaled the shank g of the hook or eye g, as shown in Fig. 2, said shank g being provided with a rivethead, g, on the under side of the head c, as shown in said Fig. 2, so as to permit the said shank g to turn around its axis in the vertical perforation in said head c. Ina vertical recess in the center piece, a', and between the inner portions of the bow-straps (l (l, is located the metal becket-strap 7L, that projects upward far enough to receive the sheavespindle e, as shown, said becket-strap having' an eye, 7L', in its lower end adapted to receive the becket L', as shown in Figs. l and 2.
By this arrangement and construction I am able to produce a double or multiple block with a sti'tt' swivel hook or eye in a very strong', durable, and simple manner, composed of very few parts, easily made, and easily put together. By the construction as shown and described the strain on the block is conveyed from the hook or eye g directly to the spindle c by the medium of the metal head c -c c and the wroughtmetal bowstraps d d d d without causing any strain whatever on the body of the block. In a like manner the strain on the becket/L' is conveyed directly to said spindle c by the medium of the metal becket-strap 71, as above de scribed and shown in the drawings.
I have represented in the drawings a block with two sheaves only; but the block may be provided with an increase of sheaves and corresponding bowstraps and division or center pieces without departing from the essence of my invention.
That I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- 1. In a double or multiple block, the head c and its lateral bars or saddle-pieces c c', and hook or eye g g', journaled and loosely riveted to said hea `l,combined with the bowstraps d d', the block-body, and the spindle c,
with its sheaves f j", substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a double or multiple block, the head IOO c, and hook 01.' eye g g,100seiy riveted to said head, the block-body having the bow-straps d CZ Suspended from the lateral bars or saddlepeees c c of the heed c, the spindle e, passing Jthrough thebloek-body, its sheaves, and b0W-st1aps,and thebeeket-s'mp h, suspeiided from the sheave-spindie and provided with the becket 1T, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonywhereofIha'vesigned mynmne I'o to this specicaton, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, 0u this 1st day of February, A. D., 1889. 4
THOMAS R. FERRALL.
