OVERDRAW OR CHECK REIN ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,456, dated April 30, 1889.

Be it known that I, RICHARD W. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of. Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overdraw or Check Rein Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to overdraw or chec rein attachments; and it consists in the construction and combination of certain mechanical devices, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The essential features of the invention consist in an attaching-loop, for the purposes set forth, comprising a plate with a tongue or web provided with side flanges in each side thereof to form recesses, within which the ends of a leather loop are embedded and secured, and having a closed yoke swiveled thereto.

The object of the improvement is to make a compact loop ofk neat appearance, simple,

effective, and convenient in construction and operation, strong and durable, easily handled and readily understood, and cheap of manufacture. I attain this obj ect by the preferred construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which* Figure 1 is a side elevation of a check or water hook and a part of an overdraw-rein, showing the improved loop applied in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts of theloop disassembled. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the leather-loop-supporting plate. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the leather loop detached.

C represents a metallic plate, having a tongue or webbing, c, constructed centrally therein, and provided with a rivet-hole,`c, and side flanges, c2, projecting outwardly from both sides thereof. The said flanges terminate in a cross-flange, c3, to form a stop or limitation at one, end, and are open at their oppo-` C are adapted to receive the two ends of a doubled strap, E, which snugly lit therein, and are firmly secured to the plate C by a rivet, e, passing through the said strap ends and the webbing or tongue c. The depth of the recesses are equal to the thickness of the strap ends and of the same contour and width. By this means the strap ends are firmly held against lateral movement and the strap-loop rigidly held in one position. This construction simplifies the attachment of the ends of the strap and requires but a single rivet to secure them to the plate C. Aside from the structural advantages set forth, a neat and compact loop is provided, which dispenses with unsightly projecting strap ends.

Theclosed end of the plate C has a headed pin or stud, d, integrally formed therewith or otherwise secured thereto. The said pin or stud d engages with a central socket, d, of a closed yoke, D,having an anti-friction roller on the straight bar thereof. ,The checkrein or overdraw B is attached to the yoke D, as fully shown in Fig. l, and theloop formed by securing the ends of the strap E to the plate C is adapted to be slipped over and off from the check or water hook A. As shown, the sides of the plate C are tapered, and diverge from the closed end thereof toward the open end. This construction aids in a measure in holding the strap ends more firmly against movement and disengagement by a contraction of said strap ends in the reduced part of the plate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isM

1. As an improved article of manufacture, a loop for overdraw or check reins, consisting of a body portion or plate with a recess on each side thereof and marginal flanges on theside and rear end and perforated to receive the rivet or bolt for securing Vthe strap-loop, in combination with said loop and provided with the attaching-ring, substantially as described.

2. The attaching device for overdraw or check reins, substantially as described, of a plate having a tongue with flanges projecting IOO from the edges of the sides and one end thereof, a closed yoke swiveled to one end of said plate by a headed stud or pin engaging a central socket of said yoke, and a leather-strap loop Whose ends are snugly fitted between the flanges of the plate and bearing upon and secured to the tongue thereof by a single rivet, substantially as described.
