SURGEONS KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,549, dated April 16, 1889.

Be it known that I, HENRY E. GEMRIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and countyof Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Surgeons Knives, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a surgeons knife formed of parts, which may be readily separated for purposes of cleansing, &c.

It also consists of novel means for holding the parts intact.

It also consists of novel means for opening the blade or blades thereof.

Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a surgeons knife embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 1, with one side of the handle removed. Fig. '4 represents a section on line a: 00, Fig. 2.

Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A rep resents the blades of a knife, and B the handle thereof, the latter being formed of two parts or sides, a a. Connected with one part of the handle are pins 1 2 3, the pins 1 forming the pivots of the blades, the pins 2 con stitut-ing stops for the blades in open or closed positions of the same, and the pins 3 forming pivots for the fastenings O, to be hereinafter referred to. The other side or part of the handle has openings coincident with the several pins, so as to receive the same. In the heels of the blades are recesses 4 5, which are 011 opposite sides of said heels and located obliquely to each other.

The fastenings O consist of pieces of suit able metal, located between the side pieces of the handle, at the backs thereof, and having on their inner faces the tongues 6 and on the ends thereof the lips 7, forming clasps, the tongues being adapted to enter the recesses 5 in the heels of the blades and the clasps or lips 7 to embrace the side of the handle.

The ends of the fastenings O are extended beyond their pivots or axes, forming heels 0, which enter the handle in such manner that when the blade is closed it comes in contact with said heel, as most plainly shown. in Fi t The operation is as follows: When the knife is closed, it may be opened as follows: The thumb or finger is applied to the fastening of the required blade and said fastening thereby thrown out, as shown by arrows, whereby the tongue 6 leaves the recess 4 of the blade and the clasp or lip 7 clears the sides of the handle. Simultaneously therewith the heel C bears against the edge of the blade, so that the blade is forced out, and consequently opened. The fastening O is new advanced against the heel of the blade, the tongue 6 entering the recess 5 and the lips 7 embracing the sides of the handle. lhe handle may now be grasped and the forefinger pressed against the back of the fastening 0, whereby the latter is prevented from opening, and as a consequence the blade remains open. By again throwing out the fastening the blade may be closed, and when the fastening is returned to its normal posi tion the tongue thereof enters the recess at and the lips again embrace the sides of the handle, the blade remainingin closed condition, it being evident that, owing to the lips 7, the sides or parts of the handle are prevented from separation, and thus the knife remains intact whether the blade is open or closed. After the knife has rendered service the fastenings are swung out, and the handle may then be separated and the blades detached from their pivots, thus adapting all parts of the knife to be readily cleansed-a feature of great importance, appreciable in surgery after an operation has been performed.

It is evident that the parts of the knife may be readily assembled or set up, so as to be in condition for further use.

While the invention is more especially adapted for surgical purposes, I do not limit myself to such use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A knifehandle consisting of two separate parts and a fastening device with lips adapted to embrace the outer sides of the said parts at their ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a knife, substantially as described, a fastening formed with a tongue for engagement with. a recess in the blade and. with lips for clasping or embracing the sides of the handle, as stated.

3. In a knife formed of detachable parts, substantially as described, a blade having recesses in opposite sides of its heel, and a fastening device provided with a tongue which engages with either recess in closed or open position of the blade and lips Which embrace the detachable sides of the handle, thus keeping the members of the knife intact, the parts being combined as stated.

4. In a knife formed of detachable parts, consisting of a separable handle, a blade, and

a fastening device, the pivot-pins 1 3 and stoppin 2, connected with one part of the handle, said parts of the handle being held intact by the fastening device, all combined substantiallyas described.

5. The fastening C, havinga heel, C, which is adapted to press against the blade and open 20 the same, substantially as described.
