F. W. TIEMANN. WASHING MACHINE,
Patented Apr. 9

UNITED STATES PATENT @EEicEm FRIEDRICH W. TIEMANN, OF FORT IVAYNE, INDIANA.
WASH|NG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,228, dated April 9, 1889.
Application filed March 27, 1888. Serial No. 268,608. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIGH W. TIEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort lVayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing-h/Iachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to washing-machines, and the purpose thereof is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive mechanism whereby clothing may be cleansed thoroughly without injurious rubbing and without the danger so often experienced of frail fabrics being caught in some part or parts of the apparatus and being torn.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and then specifically pointed out and defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the rotating washer or barrel. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the supporting-frame 0f the machine, consisting of two uprights, 2, connected by a strip, 3, strengthened by diagonal braces 4. In the upper ends of the standards or uprights :2 are formed seats 5, for a purpose presently to be shown.
The numeral 6 denotes the tank or barrel, which may be square, round, or polygonal in cross-section. This barrel is mounted within a rectangular frame, 7, by means of trunnions 8; having a central bearing upon said frame. Mounted upon the longer bars thereof are half-disks 9, having a semicircular slot, 19, formed in each, through which projects a bolt or finger, 12, rigid upon the barrel. A thumbnut, 13, turns upon the out-er threaded end of this bolt, whereby the half-disk on each side may be firmly locked against a sleeve or washer, 14, between the half-disk and the barrel. By these devices the barrel may be adjusted with its axis at any angle with the plane of the rectangular frame 7. Projecting from each end of the said frame are journals 15, upon one of which is mounted a crank, 16. These journals rest in the seats 5 in the upper ends of the uprights 2.
Access is obtained to the barrel by means of a lid, 17, having a rubber head, 18, engaging with a flange upon .the interior of the barrel to secure a close joint. A faucet, 19, is placed in the lid to allow the air and steam to enter and escape from the interior. Within the barrel one or more corrugated surfaces or rubbers, 20, may be formed or attached to the interior wall, and these rubbing-surfaces may be more or less extensive, as desired.
The operation of the mechanism is obvious. Clothing, together with water and soap, being placed within the barrel, and the lid closed, the barrel is adjusted with its axis at any suitable angle to the frame 7, and is then looked in place by means of the set-screw or thumb-nuts 1S and half-disks 9. The frame 7 isthen revolved upon its journals 15, the clothes falling from end to end, agitating the entire inclosed contents and rubbing the clothing across the corrugated surfaces 20. The clothing is thoroughly cleansed without tearing or other injury, and in cases where less agitation and rubbing may be desirable the barrel may be inclined ata smaller angle with the frame 7, or may be even brought into a horizontal position.
What I claim is In a washing-machine, the combination, with a supporting-frame having seats or bearings, of a rectangular frame having journals engaging therewith, and a barrel pivotally mounted within said frame and provided with bolts projecting through curved slots formed in half-disks mounted on said rectangular frame, thumbnuts being turned upon the bolts to lock the barrel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FREDRIOH IV. TIEMANN.
W'itnesses:
HENRY J. LUPP, W. RIPPE.
