Description

1 (NoModeL) S. R. LAWSHE.
LIGHTNING ROD AND COUPLING.
No. 400,464. Patelited Apr. 2. 1889.
' ters and figures of reference marked thereon UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SPENCER R. LAIVSI'IE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LIGHTNING-ROD AND COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 400,464, dated April 2, 1889. Application filed October 15, 1888. Serial No. 288,17 6. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SPENCER R. LAWSHE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lightning- Rods and Lightning-Rod Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to bea clear, full, and exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let- 7 which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to lightning-rods which I put together in sections; and it consists in the method of fastening the coupling-burr to the several sections of the rod.
Figure 1 represents a portion of the spiral section of a lightning-rod having a tenon, A, at the end, with shoulders I) b, which tenon I prefermaking by cutting the section of the rod to the depth of the flanges a sufficient distance from the end to give the required length of tenon and turning each portion of the flange so out upon itself, so as to form the shoulders I) b, as shown in 2. Fig. 3 represents a coupling-burr having a male and female screw, the ends of which are provided with serrated flanges C C, having shoulders cl d, as shown in a perspective view of the lower end of the coupling. The end of the coupling is passed over the tenon A a suificient distance, so that, when the flanges C C are forced down against the rod the shoulders 01 (Z lock with the shoulders Z) Z) and form a perfect union, preventing the coupling from slipping or breaking from the rod. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of the two parts of the coupling-burr joined and the flanges C C forced down against the rod, a portion of the flanges of the rod being broken away to show the shoulders 17 I), held in their position by the shoulders (Z (Z of the coupling-burr.
I do not confine myself to any particular form of rod or method of making the same. The rod maybe composed of one material, or two or more, and of any form desired,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A coupling-burr provided at its ends with serrated flanges C C, having shoulders (Z d, which shoulders lock with the shoulders Z) Z) of the tenon A upon the flanges C C being forced down on the rod, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
