SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,761, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed July 6, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DAVID MAKEM- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Linn and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in churns; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a churn embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same through the dashers. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the steps of the dashers enlarged.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the churn-barrel, having the removable lid a and the floor a, and B3 are similar vertical standards rising from opposite points of the lid and having the transverse shaft (3 journaled in bearings made in them near their upper ends, which shaft is provided with a crank-handle, c, on its extension outside of one bearing. D E are bevel gearwheels 011 said shaft and facing each other. The gear-wheel D is of less diameter than the gear-wheel E, and meshes with a gear-wheel, F, on the squared upper end of the dasherrod f. The larger gear-wheel, E, meshes with a gear-wheel, G, having a sleeve, II, that surrounds and turns on the rounded portion h of the dasher-rod, and is mounted in a bear- This sleeve is provided on' its'lower end within the churn-barrel with the squared extension J.
J is a rectangular sleeve fitting upon the squared extension J, and having the four transverse equidistant arms j standing radially out from it.
The gear-wheel F is removable from the upper end of the dasher-rod, and the gearwheel G, with its sleeve, may be removed from the bearing a" and the rounded portion of the dasher-rod, thus releasing the upper end of the outer dasher.

The sleeve K has depending within it a hollow reversed conical step, M, resting in a socket, m, secured centrally to the floor of the churn, and the lower end of the dasherrod f is made conical, and has a bearing in said step, as shown. The part of the dasherrod betweenthe arms j andk is rectangular in cross-section, and is surrounded by theaxial rectangular sleeve '22 of the inner dasher, N, which has radial arms 0 at its upper and lowerends similar to but shorter than the arms j or 70, and connecting beater-arms P, similar to the beater-arms L.
It is evident from the described construction that the two dashers must rotate in opposite directions, the large outer dasher preferably turning to the right and the inner dasher to the left. It is also evident that when the lid is removed the driving mechanism and sleeve H will come away therewith and will leave the two dashers and the dasherrod in the churn, so that the latter can be easily cleaned.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a churn, the combination of the rectangular dasher-rod provided with a conical lower end, the inner dasher provided with a rectangular axial sleeve fitting on the dasherrod, the loose circular sleeve H, mounted on an upper rounded portion of the dasher-rod, and the outer dasher provided at its upper end with a rectangular sleeve, J, embracing the lower squared extension of the sleeve H, and at its lower end with the sleeve K, having the inverted conical step mounted in a suitable socket in the churn-body and forming a bearing for the conical lower end of the dasherrod, substantially as specified.
2. In a churn, the combination, with the churn-tub provided with a suitable cover having a central bearing, a, of the vertical squared dasher-rod f, provided with arounded portion, h, and a squared upper extremity, the removable geai wheel F, fitting on the squared extremity of the dasher-rod, the gear-wheel G, above the churn-cover and provided with a circular sleeve, II, mounted in the bearing a and having a squared extension, J, on its lower end, the outer dasher provided With a rectangular sleeve, J, fitting on the squared extension J, the inner dasher provided With a square axial sleeve fitting on the dasher-rod below the sleeve J, and the horizontal shaft 0, provided with the gear-Wheels E and D, which mesh, respective1y,with the gear-Wheels G and F, substantially as specified.
