SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,728, dated March 19, 1889.
Application iiled September 25, 1888. Serial No. 286,355. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, PELEG C. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buckhannon, in the county of Upshur and State of West Virginia, have invented new and use` ful Improvements in Churns, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rotary churns; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a churn embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on the line a@ oo of Fig. l. Fig. 4. is a detail view of the lower bearing for the dasher-shaft, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the upper bearing for the same.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates thcbase, having the standard B erected at the center of its rear side, as shown. On the upper side of the base I secure a curved bracket or guide, C, as shown,which is adapted to receive the lower end of the churn-body and prevent lateral movement of the same when the device is in use. The standard. is braced at its lower end by the brackets or angle-irons D, as shown.
Near the upper end of the standard I secure the forwardly-projecting horizontal arms E F, which have a vertical brace or bar, G, secured between at about' their cen ters, as shown. The driving-shaft I'I is journaled in bearings formed in the standard and the bar G, and has a spur-pinion, I, on its rear end and a bevel-pinion, J, on its front end. The spurpinion I meshes with the internal gear-teeth, II, of a circular rim, L, secured to a fly-wheel, M. This fly-wheel M is mounted on a stubshaft, N, projecting rearward from the standard near the upper end thereof. By this arrangement the spur-pinion is protected and the tty-wheel and drivin g-wheel are combined, so as to provide a very compactly-arranged device.
The upper horizontal arm,E,is provided in its front end with a vertical notch or openended slot, O, and in its upper side it has a recess or cutaway portion, I), which communicates with the sides of the said slot or notch, and in this recess I secure a plate, Q, having a key-hole slot, R, which is arranged over the notch O and in alignment therewith. The opposing walls of the key-hole are projected slightly inward from the opposing walls of the notch O, thereby forming the ribs S, as shown.
The front end of the lower horizontal arm, F, is bifurcated, as shown, to receive the dasher-shaft, and the upper sides of the arms of bifurcation are cut away or reduced to receive the sectional bearing T. This sectional bearing is composed of a plate, U, secured rigidly upon the reduced portions of the arms of the l' if1'1rcations, at the rear ends thereof, and having a semicircular recess or notch, V, in its front edge and a similar plate, XV, hinged to the plate U, and having a semicircular notch or recess, X, in its rear edge. This plate YV is provided with alug or projection, Y, on one side at its front end, which serves as a rest for the iin ger of the operator when turning said plate outward to release the dasher. In the inner side of one of the arn'is of the bifurcation I form a recess, Z, in which is secured a spring, a, having a shoulder, b, projecting upward and forming a latch adapted to engage the swinging plate I and lock the same around the dasher.
o designates the churn-body, which is cylindrical or nearly cylindrical in form, and is constructed in the usual manner. The lid d of the churn is constructed in two semicircular sections@ e, which it together around the flasher-shaft, and are provided with an annular shoulder, f,which engages the upper end of the churn-bod y, and thereby secures the lid in place.
g 71, designate the outer and inner dashershafts, respectively, which have the inverted- U shaped dashers i, formed integral with and depending' from their lower ends. The outer shaft, ,f/,is tubular or hollow and has a bevel gear-pinion, y', on its upper end. The inner dasher-shaft is solid and extends through the outer tubular shaft, and is provided near its upper end with a bevelpinion, 7o. These bevel gear-pinions j and l.; mesh with the pinion .I on the front end of the driving-shaft, below and above said shaft, respectively, s0 that the dashershafts are rotated in opposite directions when the device is in operation, as i will be readily understood.
The upper extremity of the inner dasher- IOO shaft is provided with an annular groove, Z, which is adapted to engage the ribs S, forming the walls of the key-hole slot R, to permit the dasher-shaft to be placed in position or be removed from the horizontal supporting arm. Above this annular groove the dashershaft is provided with an annular shoulder, m, which rests on the upper side of the plate Q, and between lthe groove Z and the shoulder m the diameter of the dasher-shaft is such as to fit snugly in the circular portion of the key-hole slot R, and thereby prevent the shaft being accidentally withdrawn.
In operation the cream is placed in the churn-body and the iiy-Wheel operated, so as to rotate the dashers in opposite directions, thereby thoroughly agitating the cream, so as to churn the same and produce the butter. When the butter has been produced, the plate W is swung forward, so as to provide for the removal of the outer dasher-shaft, and the inner dasher-shaft is then raised, so as to bring the annular groove Z into alignment with the ribs S, after which the dashershafts and churn-body are moved horizontally forward, so as to cleary the arms E F. The lid is then taken off the churn-body and the dasher removed, so that the butter can be taken out to be Worked and prepared for use.
It will be observed that my churn is very simple and efficient and constructed inY a strong and durable manner. The dashers are formed integral with the dasher-shafts, so that they are rotated positively and rapidly without any lost motion. By this construction` also, I dispense with the use of the securing nuts and bolts within the churn-body, which are liable to corrode the milk and spoil the butter. The dasher-shafts can be 'quickly removed and `placed in position in the supporting-arms, and when placed therein will be firmly held in proper operative position. The curved bracket C serves to guide the churnbody into proper position beneath the front ends of the horizontal arms, so that the dashers will not be turned to one side, the effect of which would be to cause the dashers to run hard, besides causing an unequal agitation of the parts of the cream.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the standard, the arms E F, projecting horizontally forward therefrom and having their front ends bifurcated, the dashers inserted through said bifurcated ends, the plate U, secured to the lower arm, the plate NV, hinged to the plate U, and the spring secured to said arm and engaging the plate W', the said plates U I encircling the outer dasher, as set forth.
