Description

(No ModeL) N. W. RASNIGK.
ATTACHMENT FOR HANDSAWS. No. 399,695. Patented Marf19. 1889.
,GL WW W W- 11 M NIMUM w -W H NOAH WEBSTER RASNIGK, OF STRATTON, VIRGINIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR HANDSAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,695, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed October 3, 1888.
T0 'aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NOAH IVEBSTER RAS- NICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stratton, in the county of Dickenson and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Handsaws; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to handsaws; and it has for its object to provide a simple and efficient and at the same time inexpensive de vice for use in connection with this class of tools, whereby the blade of the saw will be securely held in place between suitably-arranged metallic bars extended longitudinally upon each side of the blade, and thus retained against possible springing or warping.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means by which the blade of the saw may be vertically adjusted between said bars, so as to limit the depth of the cut, as may be desired.
To these ends, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar combinations and in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand.- saw embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a modification.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the handle of the saw, which may be of any suitable and well-known construction.
B is a bar of metal securely attached. at its base to the handle, as shown, the flanged portion a being fitted within a vertical slot or re cess formed in the handle and secured there- Serial No. 287,061. (No model.)
in by means of rivets I), passed through the handle.
0 is the saw-blade, which is substantially rectangular in form, its ends being at right angles to the direction of the cutting-edge and 5 5 provided with a series of notches, as shown at c. The bar B is provided with a vertical slot, B which extends from the point at which the bar is secured to the handle to a point near the opposite end of the bar, and the portion of the bar intervening between the end of the slot and the extreme end of the bar is cut away, so as to form the neck D, which is screw-threaded and provided with a cap or nut, D for a purpose which will presently appear. The length of the saw-blade is such as to permit of its free vertical movement within the slot B when the cap D is removed. The serrations or notches 0, formed upon the end of the blade adjacent to the handle, are designed to engage lugs or projections d, provided within the inner end of the slot, and
the end of the cap D adjacent to the sawblade is provided with an annular projection or rim, g, which is adapted to engage the serrations or notches 0, formed at the outer end of the blade.
The operation of the device is as follows: The screw-cap I) having been removed, the blade 0 is placed within the slot B and the cap is again replaced upon the neck D. The projection described upon the inner face of the cap will engage the serrations or notches upon the adjacent end of the saw-blade, and the blade will be forced toward the handle until the serrations upon the opposite end of the blade engage the lugs d, and the same is held securely in its adjusted position. It will be readily understood that the blade may be quickly and securely adjusted to any desired position within the slot by simply loosening the cap.
The construction above described is capable of certain modifications without departing from the spirit of my invention. Such a modification I have shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. In this construction I have substituted for the lugs cl within the inner end of the slot and for the rim g upon the cap the bars J, provided with notches corresponding I00 with the notches upon the ends of the sawblade. These bars may be arranged vertically at either end of the saw-blade, as shown, and permit of a greater field of vertical adjustment than would otherwise be possible.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new is i 1. The herein-described handsaw, comprisin g in combination a handle, a vertically-slotted bar secured at one of its ends to the handle and provided at its opposite end with a screwthreaded neck, a screw-threaded cap to e11- gage said neck, and a saw-blade fitted within the vertical slot and adapted to be retained therein by the cap, substantially as described.
2. In a device for the purpose described, a handle, a vertically-slotted bar having one of its ends secured to the handle and its opposite end provided with an adjustable cap or nut, the inner end of which is provided with an annular extension or collar, as described, a saw-blade having its inner end provided with a series of notches to engage lugs provided within the end of the vertical slot adjacent to the handle, and its opposite end furnished with similar notches to engage the collar upon the cap, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
