ANTI-BATTLER FOR THILL-COLJPLINGS.
SYCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 899,44*?, dated March 12, 1889.
Application filed November 8, 1888. Serial No. 290,301. (No model.)
To all 107mm/ it 71mg con/cern:
Be it known that I, 'FRED PHELPS S'JI'L'Es, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Sparta, in the county of Monroe and State of \`\"iscon sin, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Anti-Rattlers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same., reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the t letters and figures ot' reference marked thereon, which lli'orm a part ol' this specification.
This invention relates to anti-rattlers t'or vehicles that are provid ed with thills or poles, and aims to contrive a simple device for taking` up the wear in the thill or pole coupling1 and preventing' an \,v lost motion which prod nees the disagreeable noise.
The improvement consists in a strip ot' nntempered metal, rn'ettjfralilv steel, bent api proximate/l5v in the I'orin oli' a U,and havinga set-screw screwed through one limb of the device and ad apt ed to bear against the other lji lnb to force the two limbs apart the proper distance. The set-screw is arranged near thedi- I, Vvided or open end of the device for two reasons; iirst, less pressure is required at this point to separate the said limbs, and, second, the sei-screw eau be reached and turned without the necessity ot' removingl the device.
In the drawings, Ifig'ure 'l is a perspective view ot' an anti-rattler embodying my invention; 'Fien 2, a side view showingthe limbs ot the device separated b v dotted lines.
The device Ais composed off a strip, A, which Ais bent on itself about midway of its ends into approximately the U shape shown. The setscrew B passes through the limb Z) of the device, and its inner end is adapted to bear on the limb b', to 'force the two limbs b and b apart at their tree ends.
The device is designed to be placed between the rear end of the thill or pole iron and the rear wall of the axle-slip, the closed end beingl up and the free end pointing,` down. XVhen the couplingbecomes worn, the set-screw I3 is turned in to separate the limbs Z) and Il and take up the wear. A iam-nut may bc provided, to prevent the screw ll from turning' back. l
IIa-ving thus described in v invention, what I el ai m, and desire to secure b y het-ter Patent,
ll. The lierein-described anti-rattler, con.n posedoli' the strip bent in an in verted-U shape and having a set-screw passed through one of its limbs and adapted to bear on its other limb to force the two limbs apart to take np wear, substantially as deserilnnl.
il. The hereinbeiore shown and described anti-rattler, composed of an untempered strip of metal bent to an inverted-U shape, and the set-screw arranged at the separated ends ot' the limbs passing through one of the said limbs and adapted to bear ou the other limb, to force the two limbs apart to take up wear, substantially as described.
In test imony whereof I a fix m signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED PIIILPS CTILES.
