SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,253, dated February 19, 1889.

Be it known that I, CHARLES WILLIAM HEL- BIG, of New York city, New York, have in .vented an Improvement in Lens-Holders for Signal-Lamps, of. which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved means for attaching the lenses to railway signal-lamps. By this improved construction lenses of di fferent thicknesses can be quickly secured to the lamps, and they can be easily tightened up it they should become loose.

The invention consists in the various features of improvcn'lont more full y pointed out in the claims.

The letter (1 represents the body of a lamp band 6 there are secured as many inwardlyproject'ing lugs '71 as there are slots in the hood, the number shown being three.

lugs are shorter than the length of the slots, and they are placed at such a position on the band 2 as to project into the slots when the band encircles the hood.

In use the lens 0 is placed within the hood, and the band is placed around the hood and is then drawn taut by screw 9. The lugs h .will project over the edge of the lens, and as the band is tightened up they will be drawn along the slots. Thus as the slots are inclined the lugs will come nearer and nearer to the lens. In this Way the lens may be firmly locked to its seat With any desired degree of pressure. Should the lens at any time get loose, it is only necessary to draw up the screw g.

hat I claim is 1. The combination of a lamp having slotted hood I) and lens 0, with the elastic band 6, having lugs h and eyes f, and with the screw g, passing through said eyes, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of a lamp having hood Z), that is provided with inclined slots (1, with an elastic band that surrounds the hood and adapted to be tightened up, and with tin: lugs 71, secured to such band and projecting through the inclined slots (Z, substantially as specified.
