Description

H. FRY.
(No Model.)
PLANE.
Patented Feb. 19, 1889.
WITNESSES orney Ntra Starts Nartnr HENRY FRY, OF EUGENE CITY, OREGON.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,247', dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed September 13, 1888. Serial No. 285,311. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FRY, a Citizen of the United States of America, residing at Eugene City, in the county ot' Lane and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planes 5 andi do hereby declare the followin g to bea full, clear, and exaet deseription ot' the invention, sueh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in carpenters planes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination ot' the parts thereof, as will be more t'ully hereinafter de seribed and claimed.
The object of my invention is to con struct a plane wherein the depth. ot' out ot' the bit may be adjusted while the plane isin motion without readji'isting the bit after the initial setting thereof. I attain this objeetby the construction illustrated inthe aecompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference are used to designate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is a sectionalelevation ot a plane, showing my imj'iroved construction. in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the bitguard.
S irulieates the stock, havin the handle s, bit, aperture orwell s', and bit and wedge 1V, all of which are well known in the art.
The improvement consists in securely hinging to the back end ol.' the stock S a movable shoe or bottom, lil. 'llo the' t'orward part ot' the shoe B a stationary tianged soeket-nut, E, is secured, the serew-tlu-eaded socket thereof.l projecting upward into and movable in a :recess .formed in the stonk S. An elongated rod, A, having a lower sm'ew-threaded end to engage the serow-throadml soeket of nut E and a top projecting knob .tor engagement by the operator passes through an aperture in the plane-stock. The said rod A immediately under the top knob is provided with a eollar, a, and over this collar and iitted into the top surface ot' the stock is a plate or plates for holding the said collar and screw-rod down and preventing the saine rising from the stock.
To prevent the bit from springing backward when striking knots or when cutting deep in hard wood, due to its extended projeetion from the bottom of the stock to accommodate the improved construction, I provide a grund-casting, F, which is secured to the bottom ot' th e stock adjacent to the bit-end. rlhis guard consists of a horizontal plate, f, having serew-holes therein, and an obliquelyarrai'iged plate, f', integrally formed with its forward end. The oblique plate f has its lower edge beveled, and the greater part thereof proj eets below plate f. 1V hen this guard is .adjusted in position, the plate f thereof bears against the lower end of the bit and prevents the same from springing backward. The part ot' plate f above plate j sinks into the wood or metal. of the stock and `firmly reenforces the guard at this point.
The shoe B, working on the hinge and adj usted by the screw-rod A, virtually ,raises and lowers the pl ane-bit from and toward the suriiaee planed, causing it to eut a light or heavy shaving at the will otf the operator, and the adjustment set :t'orth may be readily attained while the plane is in motion, thereby saving the time and labor involved in setting the bits of planes now in use.
ln usin an iron plane-stock with a wooden shoe,l ,twvo bosses or lugs east with theback end ot' the stock. would make the hingin oi' said shoe praetieable, and the screw-rod A would thon work through the iron stock.
llaving thus described my invention, l elaim l. In a plane, the combination, with a stock. having a bit-well therein, of an elongated shoe hinged thereto an d solid throughout with the exception ot a slot therein ltor the passage ot. the bit thorethrough, a serew-rod li'or adjusting said. shoe, and. a casting Composed ot' a horizontal member scoured to the bottom ot' the stock. adjacent to the bit-well, and .a front integral member arranged at an angle to said horizontal member, and against which the bit has bearing at its lower end, substantially as described.
2. A plane comprising a stock with a bting against the lower end of the bit, substan-` well, an elongated shoe hinged to the rear tally as deseribed. Io end of the stock and having' :L flanged set- In testmonywhereof Iafxlnysignature in nut secured therein near the front end, a presence of two Witnesses.
revoluble screw-rod in the stool; engaging the HENRY FRY. Set-nut, and :L casting', F, having a llorizon- VtneSSeS:
tal member, f, secured to the bottom of the WV. R. MCCORMACK,
stock, and integral oblique member f', bem'- JOEL VARE.
