' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
cUsTAvUs GAERTNER, or vIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
EXERClSlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,352, dated February 5, 1889.
Application filed January 16, 1888. Serial No. 260,901. (No model.)
T0 (0 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, GUsTAvUs GAERTNER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at the city of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-l lungary, have invented a new and us sful Apparatus for Hygiene Exercise, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of the invention consists in the details of construction and combination substantially as illustrated in the drawings, hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation illustrating my newly-invented hygiene apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the line 00 :1: of Fig. 1, the winch and the lever being shown as swung down.
A designates the frame of this machine, which is held together by the bars P P P. These bars may be of any convenient form and attached in any convenient way, preferably by nuts fitted to screws upon the ends of the bars. In the top of this frame, in the bearings E E, is mounted the shaft B. Upon this shaft is mounted the pulley E and the worm 0. To the end of this shaftis attached the crank D, having the slot 0 and the adjustable handle D. At 0 is a measuring apparatus, which is driven by theworm O, and may be of any approved construction, and by the movement of its index-hand upon a graduated disk indicates the number of turns made by the shaft B. At G G in the frame of said machine is mounted the revoluble bar F. Upon this bar is mounted the collar G, which is turned by the lever L.
H designates a strong band-brake, of leather or other suitable material, to which are attached the blocks K, which may be made of wood or any other suitable material. These blocks bear upon the face of the pulley, and, being interposed between the band-brake and the pulley, prevent the'band-brake from coming against the face of the pulley. One end of this band-brake is attached to the collar G of the bar F. The other end is attached to the frame of the machine at N. which is mounted in the collar G of the revoluble bar F, is held in a horizontal position by the resistance of the band-brake H. To vary the tension of the band-brake, a movable weight, I, is provided to be slipped along on the leverli. This lever maybe graduated in any common and well-known way to inclicate the amount of tension in weight exerted on the band-brake. The handle D of the winch D may be adjusted at any desired position in the slot 0, the whole device to be substantially as illustrated in the drawings.
To use my invention, the operator grasps the handle D of the winch D and turns it like any ordinary crank. The registering device at 0 will. show how many turns of the crank are made, and at the same time the weight of the tension may be regulated by moving the weight I on the lever L. This turning of the crank is continued until the operator has had sufficient exercise.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the frame A, the bars P and P, holding the two sides of said frame together, the shaft B, journaled at E E in said frame, the wheel E, mounted on said shaft B, and the winch D, attached to said shaft B, having adjustable handle D, and slot 0, of the band-brake H, attached by one end to the said frame at N and by the other to the collar G, the blocks K K, attached to said band-brake and bearing upon the face of said wheel, the revoluble bar F, mounted on said frame A, the collar G, mounted on said bar F, the lever L, attached to said bar, and the movable weight I, adapted to be moved along the graduations of the lever L, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVUS GAERTNER. Witnesses:
EDMUND J UssEN, OTTO SOHIFEER.
