E. D. BLAKE.
WAGON TONGUE SUPPORT. I
Patented Jan. 15, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
EDWIN D. BLAKE, OF oIIIcAoo, ILLINOIS, AsSIeNoR oE TWO-FIFTHS TO FRANK ScALES, or SAME PLACE.
WAGON-TONGUE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,065, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed July 13, 1887. serial No. 244.210. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN D. BLAKE, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Supports for \Vagon Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to :make a tongue-support for wagons that will when applied relieve the necks and backs of draftanimals from the weight of the tongue or pole, and to so construct such tongue-support and the means for its attachment that it may be readily attached to the rear end of the tongue of any wagon of ordinary construction in such manner as to answer the purpose intended.
I have attained the object by constructing such support and the means for attaching the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan View of the hounds and rear part of the tongue of a wagon as ordinarily constructed, and having my spring-support attached thereto in the manner proposed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line a; a: of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing the springsupport in side view. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the spring-support and means for its attachment disconnected from the wagon. A designates the spring-support. It has a straight portion at the front end adapted to fit against a straight surface, as the under side of the rear end of the tongue or pole E. B is a plate adapted to be fitted between the sprin -support and the under side of the tongue, and, by preferen ce, having lugs or pins h at its front end adapted to project upward on each side of the tongue. At the rear said plate has ears I) projecting from its sides and provided with bolt-holes.
B is a bar or plate adapted to fit against the under side of the'spring-support, and having bolt-holes which register with those of the ears I).
C designates hook-bolts having screwthreads and nuts on their lower ends. The hooks thereof are adapted to engage or fit over the cross-piece e of the tongue, and the straight or bolt portions thereof to pass through the bolt-holes of the ears and plate B on each side of the spring-support, so as to clamp the same, with the plates B B, to the rear end of the tongue, behind the pivot or draw-pin H,which connects the tongue-hounds I to the wagon-hounds J. The rear portion of the spring-support, which projects from behind the tongue, is curved down so as to come under the axle G, and is then slightly curved upward behind the axle, and the straight part may be Inovedback or forward on the tongue before clamping it fast, so as to properly adjust the rear end under the axle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A spring-support for wagon-tongues, consisting of the spring A, having a straight portion at the front end adapted to fit the straight surface of the tongue, and a portion,
at the rear curved down to the under side of the axle and then up behind the same, in combination with plates and bolts, substantially as shown and described, for securing the same to the rear end of the tongue, as specified.
2. A spring-support for wagon-tongues, consisting of the part A, having a straight portion at one end and a curved portion at the other end, in combination with plates B, provided with ears I), having bolt-holes, bar B,
with bolt-holes registering with those of said ears, and hook-bolts O, for attaching the said part A to the rear end of the wagontongue, substantially as specified.
EDwIN D. BLAKE.
