PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,861, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed June 11, 1887. Serial No. 241,060. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH REAVS \VHITE, of Raymond, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Plows, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in plows; and it consists in certain novel constructions of the scraper-blade, its suppofling-standard, and the fastening devices, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a plow provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a rear elevation,of theimprove uents. Fig. +L is a detail view of the clip. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the scraper-blade. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation showing a different form of fastening from that shown in Fig. Fig. 7 is a detail rear view of the blade shown in Fig. Ii; and Figs. 8, 9, and 10 are detail face views of shovel-blades constructed according to my in vent-ion.
In practice the standard A is lapped alongside of beam B, and is secured thereto by clip C. This clip is formed of L-shaped sections 0 c and nut-s e e, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4, the side bars, 1, of sections a being flat, so as to clamp the standard A firmly and to prevent any slipping thereof. These side bars, 1, are slotted to permit the adjustment of the clip to different sizes. The clip being thus adjustable or extensible both laterally and vertically, it can be fitted to beams narrow in one direction and wide in the other, or to those narrow or wide in both directions, as will be readilyunderstood from Fig. 4. At its lower end the standard has a curved seat at 2 for the blade D, and is twisted at 3 at a point just above said blade, the curve or twistof said standard being such that the face 4 of the standard above the twist or bend shall be about or approximately in line with the lower rear corner of the blade. This is most clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
To permit the securing of the blade to the standard, I provide it with one and some times two or three bolt-holes, d, as will be understood from Figs. 8, 9, and 10. By the use of the two and three holes the blade may be thrown farther forward as it is worn to bring its scraping-edge into position to cut more or less, may be desired. The securing-bolt E is passed through the opening (1, and thence through an opening, F, in the standard, and is secured by a nut, c. It is usual to provide the standard with a bolt-hole, f, for the setscrew G, which may be preferred for use to more tightly secure the blade in any of its 6c adjustments on the bolt E. lVhen this screw G is employed, indentations, as g, may be einployed; or the gashes or grooves h, as shown in Fig. 3, may be provided to receive the point of the screw. However, it may be 6 5 regarded as preferable to provide the gashes h and to form the standards or uprights with an oblong end projection or tooth, H, to enter the same, and thus serve to secure the blade firmly in position.
It will be noticed that the points of the blade at 4 4 are rounded or sloped to keep it from bending or breaking. The curve of the blade is cylindrical, so that all of its corners lie in a common plane, so that the opposite edges will out alike when the blade is reversed.
By bringing the lower corner of the blade in line with the standard the whole scraper is thrown to the left of the plow-point, and consequently trims off the row between the bar of the plow and the plants.
\Vhat I claim is l. The scraper-blade as described, in combination with the standard twisted at apoint just above the blade, the curve or twist of said standard being such that the face of the standard above the bend and the lower rear corner of the scraper-blade shall be approximately in line, and fastenings for securing 0 the scraper-blade to the standard, substantially as set forth.
2. A reversible scraper-blade made 0f0blong diamond form and cylindrical in curve, so that all the corners will touch a flat surface, and having a central bolt-hole and indentations or gashes on either side of the center, substantially as set forth.
JEREMIAH REAVS WVHITE.
