UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL POLIlVKA, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
TRAVELING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,994, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed April 8, 1887. Serial No. 234,106. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL POLIWKA, of the city of Montreal, in the district of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have in vented a certain new and useful Improved Traveling-Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription of the same.
My invention has for its object to supply a want which has been long felt by those whose avocations compel them to pass much time in travelingthis is some kind of a case in which can be carried separately such articles as cuffs and collars, which in a valise must be put in proper boxes, taking up proportionally to the rest too much room, or if not so packed will be exposed to injury. Besides this, it is always inconvenient to have toilet necessariessuch as brushes, combs, &c.packed up with the other contents of a valise.
I propose to form a cylindrical case of leather or any other material, divided up into two parts by a transverse diaphragm, one of the chambers thus formed being for the reception. of cuffs and the other of collars, both being, of course, rolled up. The cylinder is open at both ends to allow of separate access to both chambers and provided with lids or covers, which may be secured in place by tongues and buckles or by a strap passing longitudinally round the case and serving in some cases as a means for carrying it, although a separate handle will usually be provided. I propose, also, to form within either or both of these chambers by concentric diaphragms central compartments, which maybe either closed or open and serve as receptacles for hair, tooth, and nail brushes, combs, &e.; or the collars or culis, or both, may occupy the central compartments and the annular chambers round them be divided by radial partitions to form receptacles for any convenient use. For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view of my case closed; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sect-ion through my case provided wit-h a securing-strap passing longitudinally around and serving as a means for carrying it; Fig. 3, a perspective view of case, showing one end open; and Fig. 4, a section through case on line a; 1', Fig. 2, the radial partitions being shown therein.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the case proper, of leather, mill-board, or any suitable substance, B being the diaphragm dividing it into two parts or sections, a and a.
C and 0 are the end covers, which may either be hinged to A and fastened with a tongue and buckle, D, or have a strap, D, passing right round itand the covers, which in that case will usually beloose. This strap I) may be arranged to pass under loops (Z d on the case and covers and be long enough to serve as a handle, or a handle proper, E, may be secured on the case.
F F are circular diaphragms or partitions placed, respectively, in chambers a a, and provided, if desired, with covers. The annular chambers thus formed in the chambers themselves may be divided up and the whole be arranged to suit the articles to be stowed in the respective compartments, space, however, being always reserved in each compartment a a for the collars and cuffs.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I beg to sta e that what I claim is as follows:
1. A traveling-case for holding cuffs, collars, and toilet necessaries, composed of a cy1indrical shell open at both ends, covers for such openings and means for holding same in place, a transverse partition in such shell, and concentric diaphragms carried by and projecting from each side of such partition, as shown and described.
2. A traveling-case for holding cuffs, collars,- and toilet necessaries, composed of a cylindrical shell having openings at both ends, covers for such openings and means for holding same in place, a transverse partition in such shell, concentric diaphragms carried by and projecting from each side of such partition, and radial partitions dividing up one of the spaces between such concentric diaphragms and shell of case, as shown and described.
Montreal, Ist day of April, A. D. 1887.
EMIL POLIWKA.
