State of illassachusetts, have invented a certain new and uset'ul Improvement in Heat- Regulating' Devices for Incubators, ot' which the following,` is a description suttieiently full,
clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention io appertains to make and use the same, retcrence being; had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved I5 incubator; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section ot' the same; Fig'. Si, a vertical transverse section; Fig'. et, an end elevation looking` t'rom the left in Fig. l, the boilers and lamp-funnel beingl removed; Fig. 5, a detail perspeceo tive ot' the sleeve-operating mechanism.

My invention relates more especially to that class of incubators in which hot water is cmployed to maintain the heat in the hatching*- chambcr; and it consists in certain novel leatures, as hereinafter fully set iorth and claimed, the object beingl to produce a sinipler and more eliective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation ot the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such mat-ters t'rom the following' 3 5 explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body or case ot' the incubator, which is provided with the usual egg trays or slides, a", in its interior, and a hinged door, li, in its side, said door 4o being locked by a clasp or catch, o. The egg-trays a; are disposed within an interior case or chamber, C, the walls ot' which form with the walls ot' the body A the air-space or insulating-chamber e', usual in incubators ot this class. Inclined or converging,l partitions g/ extend from thedoor B to an opening in the case, C, said door beingl provided with an inwardly-projecting portion, as shown at fm., which is so constructed as to tightly tit the 5o space between said partitions.
The top of the inner case, C, consists of a hot-water tank, D, the bottom of which curves upward, as shown at j" in Fie. ,3, so that the heat from said tank will radiate toward the center of the case U. A vertical pipe, l), enters the tank 1), passes upward through the body A, and is closed by a screw-cap, (l, said pipe servingas a supply-pipe, throng-h which the tank may be filled with water.

A centrally and horizontally arranged air box or pipe, K, is longitudinally disposed in the case C directly under the tank l).
A conical boiler, ll, is disposed outside the case A at the end opposite the pipe i', said boiler beine; supported in position by a pipe, 7U', one end otwhich is connected with the induction-pipes 71, and the other entering' the bottom of the boiler, said boiler beingl also supported by a pipe, I, connected with the tank D, and entering' the boiler at the top, as best shown in Fig'. 2, said pipe l forming the eduction-pipe ot' the boiler.
A lamp, P, by which the heat is imparted 8o to the water in the boiler, is disposed on an adjustable bracket, q, on the body A, in such a position that the chimney of the lamp will stand under the center ot the boiler. A conical or fumiel-shaped jacket, p, is secured on the pipe Z, and so arranged that. it embraces or surrounds the boiler, leaving' an opening,
l., between it and said boiler, which forms an annular tlue for the heated air, and also from the smoke and products oi' combustion t'rom 9o thc lamp.
A regulatingdevice for regulati ng' the tlame ot the .lamp is secured to the end ot' the case A adjacent to said boiler. The regulator consists, essentially, ot' a lever-bar, fr, which has 95 its fulcrum on a knife-edge bearing, r, centrally secured to the en d ol' body A, as seen in Fig. 4. To one end ot the bar fr is secured a cup, w, which is adapted to contain mercury, and to the opposite end is pivoted a down- Ioc wardly-projecting rod, l2. A crank-rod, 13, is journaled at 1i along the lower portion oi the end of the body A, its crank being connected with the lower end oli' the rod l2 and its opposite end provided with a rigid arm, it, connected with a sleeve, i5, which is fitted to slide on the wick-tube of the lamp l) and regulate the flame thereoi. A pipe,'15, leads from one end oli' the air-chamlwr l( into the cup ze, as shown in Fig. l, said pipe being` provided with an annular flange or ring', 17, which serves as a stop to prevent the end ot' the pipe from enteringl said cup too Atar-z'. e., so as to touch the bottom of said cup as the pivoted lever r oscillates. A counterbalan(ie-weight, 2o, is disposed on the lever r, to cause said cup to resume its normal position after having' been depressed, hereinafter described.
ln the use ot' my improvement the lamp l on the stand p being' lighted and adjusted under the bo'ilerll, the water in the boiler will be heated and pass through the eduction-pipe l into the tank l), and thence through the vertical pipe z', induction-pipes z, and pipe 7,1 into theboiler to be again reheatml. The hot water in the tank l) and said pipes furnish heat For the eggs in the trays .51', while by mea-us oi the concave bottom oi said tank the heat is concentrated ou the box K. [n case the temperature in the body beemiles too `great, the hot air in the box K and pipe will be eX- panded, and the mercury, which normally stands at a level in the cup w upon both the inside and outside oi' the lower end oi the pipe l5, will be forced out oi said tube to a slight extent and into the cup ir, containing,` the mercury, as described, thereby causing' said cup to descend by the additional weight oi' the heavy liquid therein and elevate the opposite end ot' the lever 'i'. As the end oi said lever rises, the crank-rod 13 will be turned to force the sleeve on the wick-tube oli the lamp l) gradually upward overthe flame, thus decreasing` the supply ot' heat to the boiler H until the temperature within the incubator falls sufiiciently to reduce the pressure of the hot air within bo.\v K and pipe 15, whereby the mercury will be drawn into the lower end ot' the latter to an extent, thereby lessening the weight oit' the heavy liquid in the cup w, when said cup will be raised bythe counter-balance and the sleeve on the wick-tube lowered, thereby increasing the llame of the lamp. The rising' of the cup `w by the reduction ot wei `g'ht therein as the mercury is drawn out oi it and into tube l5 at various moments will continue until the cup is stopped by the flange 17 on the pipe 15, when the lower end oi' the tube will be slightly above the bottom ot the cup and still open. li the flange 1.7 were removed, a careless :uljustment ot' the wei ght 2() might brine` the bottom oi'l cup 'u against the end olf tube 1 too early, and proper automatic regulation olf the heat would be prevented by the stoppage ot.` the Vtlow ot' mercury into the lower end oi the tube.

llavingr thus explained my invention, what l claim is- In a heat-regulatingl device ior incubators, the pivoted lever r, provided with the mercuivamp fr, and counterbalance-weight 20, the j ournaled crank-rod 13, provided with the arm -lf-t, and the pitman-rod 12, connecting' said crank-rod and said lever, in` combination with the pipe 1 5, provided with the flange l7,ii'o1c0n trolling;l the flame of the lamp and regulating the temperature within the body of the incubator, substantially as described.
