Description

Hu ELUUTT.
Lighting Stresi Lmps. No. 39.471. Patented Aug. H, 1863.
I'nv eh 2'0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
HOSEA ELLIOTT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTING STREET-LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,471, dated August 11, 1863.
- clare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming 'a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
This invention consists in the arrangement of an adjustable lamp attached to a rod or pole, which is provided with a thumb-piece, and with a case inclosing the lamp in such a manner that by depressing the thumb-piece the lamp is tilted and the door of the case inclosing the lamp is thrown open, allowing the flame of said adjustable lamp to come in contact with the burner of a street-lamp, and obviating the necessity of climbing up on a ladder in order to light said street-lamps or other lamps or lights which cannot be reached from the ground.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a lamp of any desirable construction, and arranged to burn kerosene, burning-fluid, or any other suitable material. This lamp is hung on pivots or trunnions a, which have their hearings in brackets b, rising from the top of the rod or pole B.
O is a case, made of sheet iron or other suitable material. This case is secured to the top end of the pole B, and it surrounds and protects the lamp A. It is provided with Windows c, to permit the light from the lamp in the case to strike the surrounding objects, and it is furnished with a door, (I, which is secured to a spring, e, in such a manner that it is rendered self-closing. The spring e may be secured to the case, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the door may be made to swing on vertical pivots, or the spring may be sesured in any ther desirable manner, and the door might be made to swing on a horizontal pivot, or it may be hung in any other manner provided it answers my object. The lamp A connects by a rod, f, with a thumb-piece, D, which is hinged in the lower part of the pole, so that it can be conveniently reached by the person holding the pole in the hands. By depressing the thumb-piece the lamp A is tilted, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawing. At the same time by the action of the lamp itself the door of the case 0 is thrown open and the burner of the lamp assumes such a position that it can be conveniently brought in contact with the burner of astreet-lamp or with the burner of any other light or lamp, which is placed at such a height that it cannot be reached from the ground. For gaslights a suitable attachment may be made to the pole, whereby the gas-cocks can be opened as the pole is raised, so that the gas is admitted to the burner and can be lighted when the lamp is tilted. A spiral spring, 1, which is secured in a cavity of the pole and conmeets with the bottom of the lamp, serves to carry the same back to a vertical position when the pressure on the thumb-piece ceases. This device is of the utmost convenience, particularly for lighting street-lamps. The lamp A is protected so that it can be safely carried through the open air in any weather, its light cannot be blown out, and it can be brought in contact with the burners of the street-lamps in the easiest and simplest manner. My device may, however, be also used with advantage for the purpose of lightTng lamps in threaters, churches, or in any other place where lamps or lights are placed at such a height from the ground that they cannot conveniently be reached without the use of a ladder. By my invention the use of the ladder in lighting such lamps or lights is entirely obviated.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the tilting lamp A, in combination with the case 0, self-closing door 01, pole B, and thumb-piece D, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
