BRUYOV V. NORDBERG, OF MIIVAUKEE, \VISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T() THE BRUNO NORDRERG COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CUT-OFF GEAR FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,501, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed August 3, 1888.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, BRUNO V. NORDBERG, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Tisconsiln have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Cut-Ott Gear for Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to automatic cut-oft gear for steam-engines, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a cut-ottl gear embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the upper portion of my gear. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5, Fig. 4, and Fig. U is a detail of a modification.
A is the stand that contains the valve and cut-off.
B is the rock-shaft, that, through crank C, is connected to the eccentric-rod of the engine. This rock-shaft has one bearing in the stand at a and the other in a sleeve, b, that is fitted in a housing', b. Just opposite shaft B another shaft, c, is journaled in the stand, and on shaft B is xed a carrier, d, while shaft c loosely carries a like carrier, d', and these two carriers are connected at their upper ends by links e e and bolts f f, which latter form the pivots for triggers g, one of which is interg posed between the upper arms of each carrier.
I) are lifting-levers, one of which turns loosely on shaft B and the other on shaft c, and each lifting-lever is interposed between. the lower arms of a carrier, d, and has a notch, d?, in its upper corner to receive the lower end of a trigger, g, while its lower end projects under the hanger-bar E of the valvestem F. Each ot the triggers y is weighted, as at g', to insure its engagement at the proper time with its subjacent lifting-lever D, as shown in Fig. 1. The drop of the lower ends of the lifting-levers D is limited by screwstops J, that project up through flanges j in the stand, and the valve-stem is depressed by 'a spring, K, as in patent granted me Septemtember t5, 1887, No. 369,012.
L is the governor-stem, the lower end of Serial No. 231,869. (No model.)
which rests on the upper cnd of a sliding rod, M, which in turn terminates in a concaved head, n1, having ears n., and a doubletrippingdog, o, is pivoted in head m. so that its ends project under ears `n in position to receive adjusting-screws 1), by which it is set.
The upper end ol' the stem L has a cap, l), screwed onto it, and this cap has a bolt, q, projecting up from its center into a cup, R. The bolt q is shouldered to form a seat for the cup R, and is also reduced and screw-tln-eaded to receive a nut, rr, that secures the cup R on the seat formed by so reducing it; but before the cup is placed on the bolt q a clutch, s, is slipped on said bolt, and this clutch rests on cap P and has side openings in which the short arms Q, that form part ot' the governorarms Q', lit.
T is a cap that is screwed onto the upper end of the sleeve U, that carries the governorarms, and this cap is formed with a hollow plunger, 11, that tits in the cup R. 'lhe screwthreaded boss ot' a needle, V, is passed down through the hollow in plunger n, which has side openings, zc, that communicate with cup R through the plunger.
The rod M is slotted at fm. to receive one end of a lever, ymit, that is pivot'ed to the stand at m3, and the outer end ot' this lever, which is weighted, is suspended b y a cord, z, f rom the arm 7L ot' a sleeve, 7b2, of the sleeve 71, that forms the bearing ot' the driving-shaft Il" of the governor, which shatt 71. is connected b v bevel-gearing r" hw with a sleeve, ll, that carries the governor-sleeve U. rlhe sleeve h2 has an arm, h6, in which the stud ot' a pinion, li?, revolves, and this pinion carries the pulley of the belt X,that connects the governor with the engine, and also meshes with a pinion, hs, on shat't h4. The operation ot this portion of my device does not dilt'er materially in operation from that in patent granted me September l5, 1887, No. 309,611.
Vhile the belt is on and intact it counterbalances the weight h on sleeve h2, and the connection between lever/m2 and arm 7L is slack; but should the belt break or slip oli" the pulley weight 7L will drop and arm h will lift lever mg and cause its inner end to depress the rod M and throw the dog 0 upon the triggers g and disengage them from the lifting-levers- It will be seen that the trip-lever carries and the liftingdevers have the same axis, and there is no lost motion whatever in triggers g and lifting-leversvwhen they are in engagement, and that their action is certain and noiseless.
The cup R is to be filled with oil and serves as a dash-pot to prevent jar from the sudden action of the governor.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 ahook, g3, is substituted for the weight, the effect of which is obtained by a spring, g2,'o11e end of which is caught on the hook and the other on bolt J.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is-
1. rl`he combination, with the valve and its hanger or stern, of two lifting-levers independent of each other and of the valvehanger, two triggers or trip-levers, and carriers therefor oscillating on the same center as the lifting-levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the trip-levers and lifting mechanism, of the governor and its stem and a sliding rod, and a tripping-dog pivoted to the lower portion of the said rod, and adjusting-screws therefor, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
BRUNO V. NORDBERG.
