W. H. PARDEE.
THILL COUPLING. I No. 394,291. Patented Dec. 11, 1888.
9%? e F BY vat/1mm,
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. PARDEE, OF COLUMBIA, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,291, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed June 6, 1888.
To all whom it 71mg concern:
"3e it known that I, \VILLIAM ll. PARDEE, of Columbia, in the county of Brown and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Anti-Rattler for llhill-(louplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed dranings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved anti-rattler t'or thill-eouplings. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. a vertical transverse section. taken on line .1 J? in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the clip-bar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for preventing the rattling of thill-irons.
My invention consists in the combination, with a thill-couplin provided with a bar having an elongated right-angled end, of a mort-ised and slotted lever received upon the bar and adapted to bear upon the inner end of the thill-iron, a threaded stud. inserted in the elongated bar and provided with a milled nut bearing upon the slotted end of the lever, and a spiral sprin surrounding the threaded stud and interposed between the slotted end of the lever and the end of the elongated arm, all hereinafter more fully descril.)ed.
Upon the threaded ends of the clip A is placed the zmertured bar B, which is elongated beyond the front side of the pivot and bent downward at right angles, ii'orming an arm, 0. Upon the bar B are formed shoulders a, and in the arm inserted a screwthreaded stud, D, parallel with the body of the bar B. Upon the stud D is placed a spiral spring, E, and a milled nut, F.
()n the arm 0 placed a curved lever, G, having a mortise for receiving the said arm Serial No. 276,196. (No model.)
C. The lever G is fulcrumed upon the shoulders u, and the concave surface of its upper end bears upon the rear side of the eye of the thill-iron ii. The lower end of the lever G is provided with a slot, 0, which receives the stud l). The spring E is placed between the lever G and the arm (I, and the milled nut F is placed outside of the lever G. The stud D is provided with a head, (I, for preventing the escape of the nut F. \Vhen the nut F is turned back out of contact with the lever G, the spring E acts upon the lower end of the said lever, causing the upper end to press against the thill-iron H and preventing it from rattling upon the coupling-bolt e.
Vhen it is desired to free the thill-iron to disconnect the thills from the vehicle, the nut F is turned forward, removing the lever G from the thill-iron, and at the same time coinpressing the spring E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the clip A, pro vided with the bar B, having the shoulders a, and right-angled arm C, of the lever G, and the spring E, adapted to bring the said lever into contact with the thill-iron, substantially as specified.
The combination, with the clip A, provided with the bar B, having the shoulders a, and right-angled arm C, of the lever G, the spring E, adapted to bring the said lever into contact with the thilliron, and the threaded stud D, and milled nut F, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM H. PARDEE.
