NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VIBE SPICER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,140, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed March 30, 1888. Serial No. 268,961. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, "113E SPICER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful ln'lprovemei'its in Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
This invention has relation to looks or bolts, and has for its object to provide means whereby the position of the bolt will be visually indicated. to a person outside of the room or door having the indicator attached thereto.
This invention therefore consists in the construction, combinatitm, and arrangement. of parts, hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
\Vhere it is desirable to ascertain whether a numberof rooms are properly locked-as, for instance, by an ofiicer patrolling his beat or a janitor in charge of a buildingmuch valuable time is spent in trying each and every door. \Yhere the visual signal is at tached the condition of the lock would be at once indicated without approaching the pre1nises.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure is a face view of an ordinary lock having in v signal attached thereto, the front plate of the lock being removed to more clearly show the operating mechanism.
A indicates the lock or bolt, and B the signal, which is shown as a disk having the word shut thereon; but any other shape or style of signal may be employed. The disk 13 is attached to an arm, C, which passes through a suitable opening in the top of the lock-case. The lower end of this arm is pivoted to the lock-frame below the bolt, as shown at a. A pin or stud, b, in the side of the bolt passes through an elongated slot, c, in the arm (1. An opening in the door just above the lock allows the signal to be seen by a person on the outside.
As will be readily seen, the operation of the device is as follows: \Yhen the bolt is shot, the disk is thrown forward and the word shut is seen through the openin in the door.
What I claim as new is The combination, with a bolt, of a lever carrying a visual signal on one end, said lever being pivoted at one side of the bolt and connected thereto 'by means of a stud or pin in the bolt which works in a slot in the lever, substantially as described, whereby the movement of the bolt will vibrate the lever on its fulcrum, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of March, 1888.
VIBE SPICER.
